I just put a deposit on a Castine yesterday and wanted to say thanks.

It's been a while since my last(first) post...

https://www.hearth.com/econtent/index.php/forums/viewthread/2910/

... but I've been coming back from time to time to check the 'for sale' section and to just lurk around in the hopes of finding some good information on which stove to buy when I finally had the $$$.
The Castine seems like the best fit for my budget and heating needs so I took a ride to a dealer in Barre, MA and found their last one at an 'end of the season' discounted price. I'll go back next weekend to pay the rest and arrange for delivery and then I'll have all summer to get the liner, get it installed and stock up on cord wood.

I'll try to post pics of the install process but just wanted to thank everyone for the tips and adivce I've picked up along the way.

Cheers,
Van

Great choice in dealers ! (Higgins Energy)

I have purchased three stoves from Higgins over 20+ years as I have updated and increased the size of my house.
After my last purchase of a Hearthstone Mansfield, I got a call from Sam asking me if I was satisfied with my purchase and if I
had any questions / concerns regarding the stove. How often do you get that kind of follow up? Outstanding service....

Good luck with your new stove and wave to the oil/gas man as he drives past your driveway!

Good stove and good folk. Sounds like you have a winner!

Congratulations on your purchase of the Castine. Your post brought back memories of growing up in central Massachusetts (Worcester). My dad's family was from Athol and we would stop for ice cream in Barre after Sunday visits. He worked for H&R;in Worcester and later in Gardner. As a kid, I remember going to the Athol-Gardner football games. Don't get back that way much anymore.

Hi All,

Thanks for responses. This was the 1st time I've been to Higgins but I've heard all good things about them in the past. In fact, I had no intention of buying a stove at all that day but I work near Boston and I've been hitting all the stores between here and work pricing the stoves they all had left. Higgins beat them all by at least a couple hundred dollars. Furthermore, their last Oslo was nearby with a similar discount and big "SOLD" sign on it. I didnt want anyone to come in and snag the castine so I put the deposit on it and now the SOLD sign is mine.

As I said in my 1st post, I'll take pics when the install finally happens and look forward to coming back here from time to time looking for tips and advice.

Thanks
Van

VanLandry (and others...),
I'm hitting my local shops as well, and the best one (i.e. the one that has provided me the best advice and most professional, helpful service in the past) told me today they'd sell me their last Castine, the floor model in matte black, for $1485 if I took it away. That's the model I've been hovering over for a while. I'll be rebuilding my hearth and fireplace over the summer, so no install parts necessary yet--just the stove.

Without prying for any specifics on your deal, does that sound like a good price? They're the only Jotul dealer nearby.

Congrats on yours!

I got the matt black 6 years ago for $1400.00 So , Yes I would say you got a great price.

I paid just over $1500 and it's a matte black as well. I've been looking for a few weeks and while this was the only matte black one available all the enamled stoves were in the $1800-$1900 range and that's including their 'end of the season' discount. Under $1500 sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

FYI - Dont hesitate too long 'cause you certainly dont want to go in to buy it and see a 'SOLD' sign hanging on it.

Good Luck
