my summit is turned all the way down. i can see the secondary tubes blowing, i can also see the fire burning down from the baffle
however it seems like the fire is burning aggressively.. its not the mega fire you get when the air is wide open, but it is not the slow secondary wave like flames all over the place either like when the air is closed down. i am burning some dry wood but i don;t know what kind.. but its hardwood prolly oak or maple.. my stove was at 600 and a bed of coals so i filled her up for the night.
i put the wood in and shut her down .. the temp now is at 475
i think my stove might be getting to much air? checked my gasket and its the same... could my stove be cracked or is this normal when you don't let the wood char before shutting it down?

That's what happens when you refuel at 600 with dry wood.

I burn like that all the time...you should be OK, let us know if you dont make it.

Yep. Nothing weird happening there. In fact if it had shot up to 900 in that situation I wouldn't have been surprised. Scared, but not surprised.

YEAH!!!! PE SUMMIT BABY !!!
thanks guys!!!!

I had my Olympic up to 900 the other night..Forgot to damper her down..Didnt even phase her

i have had my sweetie hotter than that (around 900-950) but what scared me was the fact that the flame was so aggressive without me giving it air! normally i get it hot and close it down and it goes up .... but i just put the wood in in and man it took off with no air!! so i was scared because i wanted to go to bed!

A fresh load like that on top of a hot fire is going to find air whereever it can during the initial out-gassing stage. With masonry flues it isn't unusual for the stove to suck the air it needs back down the chimney in that situation.

And blast smoke out of every crack and crevice in the stove, smoking up the room.
