What exactly is it? Curious since only the largest stoves have it and not the mediums.
 
So the secondary combustion in these stoves takes place in a separate chamber, like an Everburn but not downdraft? And EBT is just a thermostat? Does it control primary and secondary air, or just secondary air?

How does this compare to a Spectrum or Alderlea T5 w/o EBT?
 
No, no. EBT is a thermostatic coil that controls the primary air during secondary combustion. But secondary combustion is occurring in the top of the firebox (beneath the baffle) just like every other updraft secondary combustion stove. The only difference is that the air is induced via a flat baffle with holes punched in it, rather than tubes.
 
Anyone know why the EBT isn't in their other stoves? Seems like a good idea?
 
yes it more of a EPA thing.i have a insert so i put a mirror so i could watch the EBT open and close.it doesnt do much.when the stove is really cold its closed.when its really hot say 800 degrees it might close.the EBT is on the bottom of the stove so the EBT is very slow to respond to heat changes since there is firebrick there and sometimes ash.sometime im going to build a temperature control air valve that takes the reading from the top of the stove.dont get me wrong the summit insert i have is great but the EBT is just to let more air in so it runs cleaner.and if it does get to hot it will restrict the air.i know theres going to be people that will disagree with me.but tell me how responsive could that EBT be when you have fire brick just above it holding the heat?if they put the EBT on the side of the stove above the firebrick it would work just like that website.the only problem is that if it did work like that and restrict the air to get a long burn time it wouldnt be EPA.
 
The EBT is on the big stove because, well, the firebox is big and if you close off most of the air, instead of having glowing coals 9 hrs later you might have cold black coals. It's not needed on the smaller PE stoves which do a good job of burning off the coals. There have been lots of discussions about this technology including a couple classics. Thanks BeGreen, I forgot how much fun that discussion was. Seems so long ago now.

Anyway, after three seasons of burning 24/7 from October to May, again, I can tell you it flat out works. Maybe it would be more "responsive" i.e. react more quickly if placed differently, but I actually think it does a better job where it is by following a nice slow even cycle, instead of flapping back and forth because of wider, more rapid temperature changes, like a top location.
 
well when i watch it and see how it "cycled" it doesnt.like i said it closes when the temp goes really hot(so i guess you could say it extented the burn time)i even took it apart adjusted it so it would cycle at around 500 or 600 degrees.but that didnt work.and the operating temp changed when you start getting a blanket of insulating ash,brick holding the heat etc.it works axactly like a thermometer.so someone should know what temp it opens and closes,no?its been on the market for a while now.and it wont change by a individuals stove setup.chimney lenght etc.temperature is temperature.and it wouldnt be a rapid change.its a small hole that works with the main air supply.
 
How are you watching it...did you remove box around it?
 
yes theres a little cover in front of the hole.and since mines a insert i put a little mirror there.im the type that has to know how something works.i cant leave anything alone usually.sometimes gets expensive hehe.since the hole is already there im gong to rig up a air controller like one from a efi car.then just get a adjustable temperature controller to operate it.anyone that believes in the EBT just ignore my posts.if you would like to know how it turns out stay tuned.would be nice to say set it to open when it reaches say 500 degrees and close say 650.or any temp you want.and i guess it would depend on the controller.might have to set it with one temp range.say above 600 its closed below 600 its open.have to look more into it.

The box that covers the "ebt box" has a gasket on it...I figured it was that way for a reason, did you notice a difference now that the "ebt box" is no longer sealed.

Just so everyone knows what we are talking about, the EBT BOX is on the right in the pic.

yes thats the EBT.the valve is the one with the little hole in the middle(that little hole is so the draft doesnt open the valve).also inside the spring is in a different chamber.this way the cooler air going into the valve side chamber doesnt affect the temperature spring.anyways on mine it also has a plate covering that hole.i thought you were talking about that?i even took the fiberglass gasket off and sealed it with high temp sealant.this way the heat would transfer to the EBT more and open the valve earlier.
