I have a ceramic insert firebox. We have never hooked up the piping, so it is unuseable. We want to put a pellet fireplace insert into the fireplace. The problem is the ceramic firebox is small and we don't have enough room for the pipe to come off the back of the insert. Can we put a hole in the ceramic firebox to run the pipe and then just go up through an open space (enclosed by walls) to the roof? Do you need a firebox for the insert and what purpose does the firebox serve. I hope I don't sound to stupid. Thanks Don

I'm trying to visualize the setup. If you can post a picture of the current installation that would help. Is the ceramic firebox like this picture? Is the firebox just sitting there on the floor with no flue attached? If yes, why not remove it entirely and go with a freestanding pellet stove instead?

You'll need to honor the 1" (3" CA) clearance to combustibles for the pellet fluepipe, but it can be done.

Hi, That is similar to what we have, our is smaller,31" 22" high,18" deep. We built out the wall, built in the firebox and a mantle. When we realized that the pipe would stick up from the roof line about 15 (lower part of the house) we never finished installing the fireplace. We just really want a fireplace, not a stove since it is a small area. I thought maybe we could cut out the back of the firebox so the piping can fit in. We are looking at a Enviro Milan insert. I would appreciate any help. Thanks for responding!

What is behind the firebox? Exterior wall? What is above the stove? Is there an empty chase to the roof?

I would think it would be better to take the firebox out and sell it, rather than destroy it. But without a picture of the current installation perhaps I'm not perceiving all the issues.

The Enviro Empress is a little shallower and has a vertical exhaust outlet that is only 15" from the surround of the insert. If there is a chase to the roof, this stove should be able to be installed exhausting up and out of the roof.

I would recommend having an Enviro dealer come out and review the setup. It seems a shame to destroy an unused firebox. Perhaps they can show an alternative.

i agree with BG and i believe enviro has a pellet insert that can be framed in only one ive heard of (we certainly do not have one, but it'd be cool to build one) seems that i saw this at the show. if thats the unit BG is talking about it sounds like the best option by far , if the ZC can be removed and replaced in total by the pellet unit it would be a much cleaner look and would also be much more likely to make your code inspector happy as the existing ZC fireplace cannot house a pellet stove unless the fireplace itself as well as the pellet insert are rated for each other. so just dropping it in and punching a hole in the back of the fireplace may very well not be a viable option. i strongly urge research be done on that very fact before proceeding. contacting your local enviro dealer would be the best first step.

P.S. let us know how it turns out( and if it is done we demand pictures) :) this would give others who surf here knowledge that it could be done , might help some folks who have a similar dilemma.

Thank You for your responses. I am going to contact the Enviro dealer and see if he will come to the house. I will let you know how I make out. I never thought this would be so difficult. Thanks again

Please let us know how its going. I'm looking at the milan also.

We are also going to look at the Quadrafire Classic Bay 1200 insert. We are totally confused on the best and cheapest way to go with the pellets. The Enviro dealer is very forthcoming. I'll keep you informed on what we decide on. If anyone has any input on the Quadrafire please let me know. Thanks Doni

All the 1200 needs are special parts from quad to have it installed zero clearances but it can be done they have a bunch you can do that way.
