Over? If you are looking for a block to put in front of the fireplace, a sheetmetal shop can make one up pretty quickly. Have them hem the edges.

Yep, a sheet metal shop can make that up in about 10 minutes. Have them use 24 ga metal. It can be painted with some high temp paint and will work fine. Put a bead of silicone around the edge of the opening under the sheet metal to seal it tight.

Thanks!

You're welcome. Make it oversize by a couple inches if possible and hem the edges.

PS: Hemming the edges means folding it over about 1/2". Face the fold towards the brick for a neat finished look.

Just one potential problem you mught run into, especially if you are going to go to a local shop and have them cut it based on measurements you give them. And based on the description, it sounds like this is purely cosmetic.

The fireplace opening itself may not be perfectly square and level in the front- you could have some "gaps" on the sides which may be noticable. Depending on what your existing fireplace is - you may want to set the "cover" slightly inside the opening to avoid that. I had to do that with something similar to what you describe, but for a different reason - my existing fireplace does not have a "flat face" where I could have mounted the "cover":
