Reminds me of the sign a rental agent put up: "FREE TRUCK" and then in smaller type it said "free use of truck to move in". Apparently they didn't want you to keep it...

Chris

But anyways- what about just keeping ut outta sight from a drive by...................

Like the signs you see in bars

"Free Beer Tomorrow"

:)

Jay

i'd skip the whole cartridge idea.just put 1/8 to 1/4 lbs. of Winchester 296 powder in the log.

i like the sign idea but people today are dumber than rocks.they would steal the wood just to see if you were serious.

Unless it's under pressure (confined in a barrel), modern powder will just burn rapidly, not "explode". They'd probably think they had gotten some good firewood!

Even handgun and rifle cartridges will just "pop" if tossed into a fire.

an old roomate in michigan threw a bean bag on a bonfire we had.he must have been sitting on it one night playing with his Ruger and dropped a 45 ACP round in it.it did much more than "pop".scared the *%#@ out of both of us.

I've found that an overly protective Chesapeake Bay Retriever to be an excellent deterant to any sort of thievery around my property.

Yes, those Chesapeakes are very protective of their turf! Great hunting dog too, especially around water.

Chris

Forget about the lethal addatives. I'm drilling a hole in a few splits of red oak and adding a small capped test tube of fox urine to the holes. And I hope I remember which ones.

Pardon the stupid question, but what will fox piss do.......................

One of the best. I have to be sure to roll the window up in the truck if we ever drive by a body of water....when she gets scent of it, she wants to go!

I bought 2 cords from a local guy that I had to pickup. I take one of my guys ( employee) with me in a box truck and take a full load. I then send the guy back to get a second and final load. Long story short this guy went to the neighbors house a took a cord of wood!!!!!! He called me on the way back to the shop and was confused because after thinking aout it the wood was stacked and not in a pile like the 1st load I helped him take. Oh yea, he said the same dog was there from the correct house where I bought the wood. I then tell him to go get the cord and return it to the neighbor and get the 2nd cord from the correct location. You can't make this stuff up.!!

Very, very strong odor. Next best to skunk, but skunk is still better. Potent stuff.

We don't have much theft around here, heck I don't even own a set of keys to the house. But as the economy nosedives, and oil prices skyrocket, I have has several conversations with neighbors about the possibility of firewood walking. The only place I can stack for the summer is right next to the road. I am thinking of getting one of those game/trail cameras that takes digital pics with a motion detector. Mount it on a tree aimed at the wood pile. I've seen them as low as $50 on ebay. Cabela's has a bunch of them. Cheap insurance...

brooktrout, be very careful on your search for one of those cameras. For sure you would need an IR camera and you will not get one for $50 either. But even those can be detected by theives. However, they can be camoflaged somewhat if you are careful. For a situation like you are talking, perhaps the best way would be to mount the camera high up in a tree and aimed down. You might have to take a couple of pictures to make certain you are aimed right, but it can be done. Still, remember there are limits to these things. They are not a long range camera but you can get a decent distance....maybe 30 yards for a maximum.

I have a couple of the trail cams and if you'd like more information, feel free to PM me.

We use the Dakota Alert as seen in many magazines. Works well to alert us, of course you must be home. People think it's closed circuit tv and are very aware of it being there. Does get set off by animals in the driveway, esp at night, but we are nosy so we get up and look, usually deer or a fox. Works for us.

Before putting your money into such a setup, will the sheriff's department bother to investigate and prosecute even if you have photo evidence? I suspect that most departments won't have to time, manpower or interest to pursue someone stealing a little firewood.

If that's the case, a dummy camera and/or sign might be just as effective and less costly.

Ken

Ken, stealing is still stealing. A thief is a thief and if someone steals firewood from you, it is up to the authorities to pursue it. Also, it is not up to the sheriff's department whether to prosecute or not. That is up to you, whether to prosecute or not.

Too many won't do something just because they think police might be too busy. Bull! Stealing firewood is no different than stealing money or going into a store and shoplifting. Let the police do the job they are hired to do.

We have ONE deputy on duty for the entire county. Although you may be right in theory, law enforcement here is much more likely to pursue drug related crimes than they are to pay attention to thefts. Even if someone gets arrested for a theft, the jail is full (mostly drug offences, I think) and they are not likely to get any signicant punishment.

it's worth a shot i suppose.i agree,$50 won't get you anything.if they see it,they will take it or destroy it.around here you could have a signed confession from the thief and the cops would say there is nothing they can do.have a neighbor report you for passing gas and the swat team would be on you like a pack of wolves.
