buy a new log splitter

brave, american, and ramsplitter have all been suggested to me. the choice seems to be based upon what you like best, im totsally clueless as to which is the best splitter. i just no i have a ton of choices. i would find the splitter that has decent features medium cost and ease of parts/service.

We just bought a used one, a 5hp with a large ram, not sure what the ton rating on it is, it was a rental unit, got it for $400 works great. Before this unit we used to borrow one from a friend that had a 3 1/2 hp motor on it, was small enough to pick up and toss in the back of the pickup. That small unit was able to split everything we put on it, maybe not on the first attempt but after the 2nd or third it would splilt it. So im not inclined to think there is a need for a 8hp 30 ton unit. As long as it has auto return and better an adjustable return ring (so it will auto stop the return cycle slightly longer than your rounds) splitting will go fast. Also if you have alot of large rounds the vertical option would be good.

I don't know what your needs are, but we've got a 25 ton Speeco(Huskee) and can't be happier. I haven't found any others in the $1K price range that looks made as well. We have split 9 cords so far with it this year.

If your leaning towards the Northstar splitter, watch for the 10% off power equiptment sale days. They have them periodically throughout the year, maybe inquire at a local store about upcoming dates. I know they include splitters on these sales. Could same some $$$

Me an Woodbutcher bought that 27 ton Troy... In our second year and no issues. Busts up even the hardest hickory and oak with no complaints

I got a Troybuilt 33 ton. If it's worth doing- it's worth overdoing.

Check Craigslist for deals! I see them on there all the time- rarely do I see what I'd call a great deal on a splitter, but they do happen.

My excuse: I don't own a motorcycle. Got to spend my money on some fun toys!
