the tree guy comes to my house today (log truck packed!) my mom calls to tell me he is here... we get into a pissing arguement because the last i heard from his sec. was over a month ago ..so i wrote him off... he stopped by my house 2 weeks ago tells my mom he's bringing wood no date just he's coming..no name... my mom tells me but doesn't know who the guy was..says some tree guy..no card no nothing...
so today she calls cause a monster truck is in the yard putting huge trees on the ground... so i get on the phone with him and he's pissed cause i told him i don't want it ... even though was a good price ... because ... like i explained to his sec.. back in march... and april it needed to be here before may.. because my yard isn't that big and i needed to get it cut so i could clean my yard before the landscaping and fertilizer companies came in .. because obviously it isn't a day project.... so it was supposed to be delivered 4/9/08 no call no show.. i called she said sorry on the 16th... same thing no call no show she calls said it was mistake so the 23rd but be home cash deal... i call on the 22 to confirm because of the previous mishaps.... no answer... 23 no call no show .... she calls on the 30th says they were trying to get the right size wood ( because i was supposed to get nothing bigger than 18 inches dia) she says she will call me back... never heard from her again.... so today guy shows up and threatens to bill me because i took up alot of his time!! i told him its to late i told your wife/sec it had to be before may haven't heard from her in a month.. he says i came by 2 weeks ago and told your mom!! and i said you didn't give her a date... you didn't even tell her who you were, i ordered wood from someone else and thats who i thought you were! (this is over the phone) needless to say i told him i would be ther in 15 minutes but he packed and left.... my mother and father in law both said the trees were gigantic at least 3 ft in dia minimum.....i also explained that he was supposed to come when the ground was still somewhat hard to save my yard not when it WAS looking great but now obiviousy its a mess from the weight.......

Am I wrong or is it just me? I also asked him to call his wife/sec to confirm our that he was supposed to come and so forth

Some people are good at their jobs, some are not. You know which your tree guy is. Don't plan on him coming back next year but of course with 3 ft diameter logs vs 18 inch I would not be inviting him. You did the right thing, send him on his way, when you get a bill counter it with the reseading and grading bill in your yard and tell him it is due within 30 days, after 30 days your contract with the landscaper is up and the price will double. He left right away so he knew he was in the wrong. I seriously would bill him if the damage was substantial!

Obviously not your consummate professional. Doesn't sound like he's any smarter than the logs he (sometimes) delivers. How frustrating! Rick

GUess What!!!!????? the other tree guy i was talking to who told me he would be glad to get rid of wood when he is cutting in town shows up 1 1/2 hrs later!! he introduces himself as we have only spoken on the phone... and says i just wanted to come by because i am down the street today so i wanted to see if you wanted the wood still and jut confirm it as i will come back with my truck around 7-8 with about 2 cds!!!! so of course i say yes and thanks for checking....he brings me about 1 3/4 cd will be back 2morrow with at least another 3/4 already cut i just gotta split (he wanted to make sure i wanted 16-18 inch) told me give 100 bucks 2 morrow!!!!

WISHY - WASHY ! You and someone else had some crazy deal goin' on back in Jan. or Feb. with a vendor and MASHED it all up ! I wouldn't put up with this indecisiveness and tell you to pound brine. I have good customers and bad ones , but only once. There are plenty of takers. It's a sellers market!

Memoires of a woodman !

That is a deal I would take and I am, errr, well, cheap! ;-P

what do you mean?????? its not the same wood guy who brought the tri axle .... and i sent home ... maybe the post was confusing i am sorry ... but i said the "other" wood guy shows up! the only wishy washy was the original wood guy who showed up today and not a month and a half ago like he was supposed to.. so like YOU said you would do i told him to pound brine!! pick up his @@@@ and go... but in this area i don't think log length is a big hit like in yours .. he'll sell it but who knows when

When someone thinks they got you they are usually jerks, your first guy was definitely a jerk. There is too much wood to pay big dollars for it. That may change in time but for now there is no reason to deal with someone with such a lack of business sense or common sense. You did well iceman.

So if I read the post right, The guy no showed in April, then stoped by your house mid May to tell you he 's dropping off a load soon. Then shows up yesterday. Did you call and cancell the order after he stopped by

He ordered it to be delivered no later than 4-9 according to his post because he did not want to damage the lawn...the guy no showed 2 different times...he cancelled and the guy showed up out of the blue saying he is going to deliver and did not leave any info...after being cancelled, then he shows with huge pieces and was supposed to be no bigger than 18" wood. I would send him packin too!

I would have taken the logs anyways! its money in the bank if you ask me

I think that you are correct in sending him packing. If he showed up a week late, that may be different, but 6 weeks later, no way.

I don't think the wood busness is as smoothe as other polished businesses may be. They have a lot of variables to deal with including customers. I would have accepted the original wood even if late. It is still wood at a good price and you may need it someday.

I have been calling a wood man here for the past month and he never calls back. I did get him on the phone a few weeks ago and he said his skidder was down and to call him back in three weeks. Now I am trying to reach him again to see about a delivery. Not many in this area who deliver log length so I will be patient with him. I don't need it for this year and if the price is right i can wait. If I don't get any wood from him by August I will get a permit and go cut my own but much easier to get it in log length at home. This guy is a busy fellow and most of these wood delivery guys aren't up to snuff with the polished business ways. Lucky to have them and I doubt they make a very large profit but do it out of their love for being in the woods and self imployed. My opinion anyway. :)

Hi Carl, There is a guy running an ad right now in my local paper. He has firewood by the semi load, I would assume log length? any way he is around Gladwin? his phone# is 989-426-6852 I'm south of Port Huron so he does deliver. Ya may want to give him a call if you need more wood. I'm pretty much all set right now. But always keep my eye's peeled just in case. GO WINGS Jay

i never spoke with "him" his wife/sec told me in on the 28th or29 she would get back to me because i told her again it was supposed to be BEFORE may so were they bringing it then (meaning delivering it that day) she said she would get back to me .. never heard from her again...and haven't heard from her.... he showed up 2 weeks ago , left message with mom who is 70 no name no number... i thought it was the other wood guy who actually showed up last night...
Bottom line how i see it... he should have called to confirm if he thought he was coming... i called them numerous times to try and confirm dates in which the blew me off.. and each day i left work early because she was very clear in telling me i had to be there and have cash in hand....

i started to but my yard isn't that large to have it sitting there for so long...plus he was gone by the time i got there...and from what i was told it wasn't the right size wood... if it was the small stuff i was gonna try and make an attempt but the large stuff now... no way... my yard was looking very good

i wish it didn't come to that ... but i am a professional and he should have been too... he shouldve kept me updated and not no call no show me 3Xs!!!! and then show up a month later just to drop it off... over here there is more than one company... another called me and asked if i was still interested and i said no because of this guy... and they said they would come the same day! but i already had a date with the orig guy....but the main reason i didn't take it is because of my yard and time now ..and neigbors will throw a fit if its not kept up (yard) thats how the town bylaws go......anyways .. it cost me a little more but saves alot so i will stay with the other guy at 60 cd already cut to length vs 40-50 for log length and i do ALL the work

Iceman is right. Business is business, if he can not do the job...both bucking and the customer side (maybe his wife does it or lacks?) then he will either have to work cheaper or be out of business.

Thank you Pecor. I will keep the phone number this time. I think you posted it earlier this spring but I didn't give it too much thought. A semi load is about twice as much as the 6 cords I was going to get. Gladwin is 60 miles from my place so I am sure he would deliver.

I got hold of my wood man today and he said he was almost ready to go into action again. His skidder was broken. He did say he would call me when he had a load and that was good enough for me. I know these guys are having their problems right now. I asked him about fuel and he groaned. It is really cutting into their small profits and if he raises his prices too much no one will be able to afford the wood. I already know of two people I referred him to who couldn't afford to purchase it with the $50.00 increase this year. Most of the cost of wood is in the handling, not the actual cost of the wood.

to think someone can't afford a 50 increase is sad.... not picking on them but times are that hard that someone cannot afford that increase!!.. our country is at its worst but people don't realize it.... i had to intervene a customer arguing at dunkin donuts over how much a cup was filled ... he wanted more in the medium so he wouldn't have to pay the extra 40 cents for an upgrade!
i am thinking about the elderly right now hurts my heart

Sad is right. More than just elderly folks hurting and moving. Can happen to anyone. Houses are for sale in rows here as you drive down any country road. We have had my wife's parants estate house for sale for the past 4 years. No takers. Started at 189,00 and now at 149,000 with no lookers. No end in sight either as this is just beginning to esculate. I am glad I didn't retire four years ago and am still working. I am a rural mailman so get to visit and see many people. Not pretty right now.

ROTF.....no problem, I am already postal. :)

I once heard a story about a guy who was driving along and someone was in his lane. He just stayed there because he was in the right. Well so did the other guy. When he got to the pearly gates, he told his story to St. Peter who said, YUP, I guess you were dead right.

You really have to figure out where you want to go from here, and then take it like it comes. Things that get to you never come to much if you can't do anything about it.
