Plywood removal ??!!!

My Home Inspector (whom I think may possibly be insane) has said:

FIREPLACE/ WOODBURNING DEVICES: FIREPLACE
PROB: (INOPERABLE) THE FIREPLACE PLYWOOD IS PRESENT AT THE CEILING IN THE
BASEMENT.
SOLU: PROPERLY REMOVE THE FIREPLACE PLYWOOD.

Last I knew, the fireplace was built on a plywood platform. Is there a reason the plywood platform should not be viewable from the basement?

I am afraid if I remove the plywood, it will damage the fireplace hearth.

You gotta love those inspectors.

I don't quite understand the wording but maybe he wants you to enclose the bottom of the hearth with drywall or something to seal it off from the basement? You need to ask him to fully explain what he means by his statement and what exactly needs to be done to get it approved. The statement you posted is very vague.

Is this a prefab (metal) fireplace or a full masonry?

The building inspector in our area insisted that I put a sheild on my chimney despite the fact that the proper distances were adhered to. I also had the inspector from my insurance company here at the same time reasureing him that it was not needed. I put the sheild on to make him happy, but where the heck do these guys come from???

I think they go out and find the one who is the biggest a hole then hire him. It doesn't matter where you go they are all exactly the same just different faces.

They take them for a ride out to a secret creek with a 6x6 20 ft long drapped across it. Next they give them 3 Marbles to put in their mouth. With each pass across the creek they spit out a marble and yell at the topo of thier lungs. When they lose all their marbles they are hired!

If it's a prefab which I assume it is since you're talking about shielding a chimney then it does sound like he's off kilter. If its a masonry fireplace it should likely be built with forms that serve to let the concrete set and the forms should be removable and not part of the structure.

I guess im in trouble too!I have a external wall masonary fireplace with the plywood showing in the basement too.Moms the word ok!!
