Harman XXV or Quadrafire MT Vernon

I'm new to pellet stoves and need some help. I like the looks of the XXV and the MtVernon. I have approx 1900 sq feet upstairs and down to heat. Will install on 1st floor. XXV 50,000BTU, MTVernon 60,000 BTU. Quad dealer says quads are more efficient, Harman dealer says Harman ;-) . All of your help will be very helpful in my decicion making, THANKS!!!

I have a Harmon XXV and I'm quite happy with the purchase. I did look at the Mt.Vernon and have to admit it is a quieter stove. I'd give more info but I'm also quite new to this.I will also say that this forum is very helpful. Good luck !!
 
I went with the Harman XXV first with the look and the construction of the stove.The price was also a selling point and the reputation of the dealer.We heat a 1,200 sq ft ranch.
 
Both are good stoves but in this case I would lean towards the Quad for more heat, quieter, easier maintenance and greater hopper capacity.
 
What are the differences between the two to your knowledge, other than BTU?
Like I said, I'm new at this so all I know is what I'm told:
Harman: better warranty, better price, good dealer(closer by), looks very well built,bottom feed, ???use of other fuels
Quad:multifuel, prettier, more BTU's, dealer is good but over an hour away

So, do you think that the mt vernon will heat my whole house from the main level?
Another reader says that they heat 2400 sq ft home with the harman xxv, from the finished basement to the main level.

Is there actually a better stove?

Hi Shelly,

I'd suggest you start with doing a lot of reading right here. Similar questions are answered here on a regular basis. After you've done a little research, go visit both dealers and see which you like and go from there.

Comparing one reader's experience to another is often not valid. They can live in a different climate zone, have a different style house, different insulation, different temperature settings, etc. The main differences have been listed. Read up on other posts comparing these stoves. There are several of them.

Both stoves have an excellent warranty and are similar. But the clincher may be the dealer. As a first time owner, it sounds like dealer support may be very important. If so, comparing to other stoves may be a moot point. You'll have to ask the Quad dealer about how well you will be supported with them being an hour away. If they have a support policy in writing that you are comfortable with, then consider the Quad. If not, go with the Harman.

Its is like we are twins - I also am looking to heat a 1800 sq ft (drafty 1830) farmhouse, and going with a new pellet stove. Yesterday I put in my order and had been deciding for weeks between the mt vernon and the harman xxv.

My dealer (Smith and May in Rockport ME) carries them both - so that wasn't a differentiator. The price was within $100 of each other, and they have similar maintanence requirements etc..

In the end the quadra mt vernon had more BTU capacity and everything else was more or less equal - so I went that route. It will be installed in august - I hope I made the right choice.

HI I own a mount vernon for some 2 years this will be our 3 rd year. This is a good stove burns 100% corn with daily cleaning (clinker removal) or 100% pelletts with three-four day clleaning. There are five panels you remove to clean ash arround heat collector tubes. Ours is black but comes in colors and is quite fancy. I can burn 100 to 120 lbs a day on high.
I am very happy with the mtvernon, I have replaced 1 ignitor(Warranty) and a door gasket. Other than that it just works.With the price of corn I will use pellets. Good luck with your selection.
 
you wont go wrong buying either one i bought harman xxv and i love it.easy to maintain
i live in wisconsin older home 2 story installed it on main floor about 1250 square feet
and havent put the stove to its full setting. my wife watches grand kids have it set
at 74 deg. upstairs at aprox. 65 deg. at - 10 deg.

My home is 1605 sq ft per floor the stove is in the basement. I heat say 1/2 the house or 1600sf easy. I usually leave it on 3 (out of 4) to prevent an overfire condition. Insulation is 2x6 wall say r19 and attic r-39. This is a good safe source of heat. It is a lot cleaner that cord wood however it cost more to operate. This is a fast easy way to wood heat your home. I however will be installing a wood boiler (TALK ABOUT SELECTION!) located in my garage and hope to heat the entire house with it. The stove (mt vernon)burns corn/pellets very well at 50/50 so whatever you can get cheeper is what I would use. I would guess the harmon to be a good unit also. Good luck and keep us posted.-scott
