Pellets are already $290 per ton delivered in western Ma. (Pittsfield) If they rise again that much (35%) next year pellets will be closer to the present oil cost and for some folks won`t be worth the extra effort involved. The cost of pellets will have to be compared with oil at the time of purchase.
Pellets will have to remain considerably less than oil or they won`t be a viable alternative.

I have seen pellet making machines and I would think about purchasing one for myself. Which I may still do just to experiment.

I believe that day is coming. I have been surprised at the large number of people purchasing pellet stoves this year as evidenced by the many threads on this forum. As demand increases and supplies of raw material decrease, the law of supply and demand will take over driving up the price. But, ya gotta have heat and you are assuming that the price of oil will not rise in tandem.

Pellets will have to get to just about $600/ton to compare with TODAYS oil prices.

And that's assuming that oil doesn't continue to skyrocket.

All time new high yet again today for oil, I see no reason that we won't be over $5.00 / gallon during this heating season.

When oil gets to $6/gallon, which really isn't that far from where we are today, a ton of pellets would be $725 for the same amount of heat.

I can't imagine that they work very well. You'd have to have a consistent, ground source of biomass (sawdust) in order to use them. Realisitcally, how many people have access to that?

Too many processes and variables.

Dysart's truck stop in Bangor, Maine (huge supplier -- they stock lots of different kinds -- NEWP, Corinth, Athens, Energex, Maine Pellet) is OUT.

I picked up the last ton they had over noon hour today.

Their warehouse guy told me that they took delivery of 600 tons two weeks ago. Let's see -- that's about 42 tons a day going out of there. In June.

They're supposed to get in several more trailers this week.

Dysart's told me two days ago they were out, but had Athens pellets coming in very soon. Quoted $219.00 a ton, and $199.00 for a tote (plus deposit.) I am in Northport and they don't deliver to that area so I bought Athens pellets from EBS in Belfast for $260.00 a ton delivered. Actually, EBS had no pellets at the time but assured me they were coming. EBS is not supposed to pre-sell, but if you have an account there...

$260.00 is a little high, but I don't have a way, nor the time, to get the Dysarts pellets.

My XXV is showing up at Smith & May next week and I'm looking forward to hooking it up later this summer.

I'm a newbie, but I've been watching this forum off and on for over a year. Very informative and I chose the XXV based on the posts I read here. Thanks.

There is a place in auburn that is selling pellets for $319.00 a ton. I hope nobody pays that rediculous price!

I ordered some from pellets2u.com. $585 for 2 tons shipped to my house. Some local dealers are selling for $260 or so per ton. Other's are at $300 per ton. Next year, need to buy early.

Where in auburn is that 319 price?! Thats outrageous! Paris farmers went up to 270 as well as aubuchon in lewiston went to 280...and I think those are too high!
