Storing Pellets

The key word is "dry". I am also a new guy with a few tons coming and I'm going to be putting them in my garage. My understanding is that each pallet is 40" x 48" and the load stands about 5-1/2' tall. These will fit in my garage, but in your case, you said you could put them in your garage if you had to. If your garage is attached to your house, it will definately be more convenient to put your pellets in there, thus avoiding going outside every few days for some fuel. Also, there will be a more consistent temperature in the garage too which will lessen the chance of condensation.

I'm going to put two pallets side-by-side and then stack the 3rd pallet of bags on top of the first two, which will save me some floor space. You may also consider getting an empty pallet in advance, cutting it down to perhaps 3' on one side and stack pellets that way too to shorten the footprint.

I'm told that as long as they are kept dry, that's what is most important.

Keep in mind that the manufacturers store their pellets outside under a protective plastic sleeve. So you should be fine as long as they are covered from the elements.

But... is your porch really able to hold several tons of pellets? That's what I'd be worried about.

I want to put them in the garage but that leaves no room for my bed for when I’m on the s---list.

Yup, my garage is underneath my house as well, but the exercise will do me good.

Sleeping on bags of pellets might actually be good for your wife's back after moving those pellets into her garage stall space. Maybe even after hefting a bag upstairs every night (if that's where the stove is).

I just got my 3 tons pellets delivered today! Man are those pallets big! The guy that delivered them had this HUGE forklift so he could only go so far in the garage. Why they don't use a smaller forklift is beyond me. I was going to order 4 tons but now I'm happy I didn't. He was really nice though, he couldn't fit 3 pallets in the garage so he hand carried one ton of pellets for me and stacked them on top of the other two pallets. I feel good that I at least have 3 tons of pellets for the winter, now if I only had a stove to burn them in HAHAHA! Who knows what is going to happen... I'm on a waiting list with a $100. deposit for a Harman stove, the company I am on the waiting list with is out of state at a Harman meeting until Friday. Hopefully, I will still get my stove at the same price that I was quoted when I put down my deposit.
So my point is about the pellets and storage... unless you will be stacking them yourself, make sure they can get the equipment inside the garage or storage area where you plan to store them they are huge and not easy to maneuver.

just an idea. I put down a significantly larger deposit for a harman. But they went as far as to write up an order form, with all the prices explaining to me that there may be some additional piping needed depending on the actual set up (since they haven't' seen my hearth yet) I wanted this sheet as they wanted a $1,000 deposit. I don't have a problem with that since they gave me a date when the install will be, as well as a fixed price on the stove, and parts.

Perhaps you could see if the company would be willing to do that?

I had spoke with the dealer on the phone, went down in person and got all the pricing from them, I was still doing research on pellets and stoves for a week. Then I called them about when I would be able to have one installed. They said they are putting people on a waiting list ( BTW, I'm 7th on the list) for the stove with a $100 deposit and they will have them in by the middle of July. This was last Monday, so going by then telling me I would have it by the middle of July, I ordered 3 tons of pellets (I didn't want to wait until mid july for the stove with fear the price of pellets would go up or I couldn't even get any) I went down to have an order written up for the stove yesterday (Wednesday) and they were not there but the son told me they were out of state at a Harman meeting and I would need to wait until they get back for the order. Then I have been reading here Harman is sold out until 09, so now I don't know if I will get one or not. I refuse to be caught up in a company over inflating the price because of the demand and their greed. So I will see what happends. I maybe looking at another stove company or selling wood pellets on Craigs List LOL

sounds like a good situation all in all.. yea in the back of my mind I'm a little freaked out too with all this chatter about places being sold out. I know they said they weren't expecting delivery until the end of July/ first week of Aug. which is right when my install date is set (Aug 7th)

now I just ordered 3 ton's of pellets that will be arriving that same day (hopefully) because I too don't want to run the risk.

I had 3 tons delivered and put in my garage side by side 3 inches apart. Before he unloaded he put the hand cart in the garage, then used the hand cart to put them in place, slick set up.

Yes that is a slick set up... My husband has a motorcycle in that side of the garage ( his car stays outside, haha) so not much room for moving around pellets. I think he will be moving a ton and a half next to the other pallet. That will give us more room and it will look more tidy

Well I have a Quadrafire Santa Fe purchased which is supposed to be installed sometime mid July. I found the availability of pellets rather tight here in North Central MA. Found a local feed store that had LG Granules (softwood from Quebec) at $255 plus shipping. Now I'm waiting until they get a load coming in my direction for delivery. I most likely will store them outside with an additional tarp.
Has anyone used this brand of pellets?

I don't think a ton of pellets are 5'6" tall , well at least mine were not , maybe 4' to 4'6" . Any way I have 6 1/2 tons in my basement taking up the same room as 4 tons did last year. I have them stacked to my basement roof [7'] . Its all in the way you stack them. Do it right and they take up little room , wrong takes up more .

Most do, not all. Make sure you check. Remember the BIG BOX store have their pellets outside.

Anyone here familiar with New England Fine Wood Pellets brand? Anyone with any trials and/or errors with this brand? Anything would be greatly helpful for this new stover.

Yeah, that's the stuff. Sorry about the slight mix-up. I been awake for a long time now working on the super cleaning of a 25-PDVC that broke down yesterday. That's what happens when no one knows how to properly care for it, and goes 3 years or so without ever cleaning the blower fans, and other areas unreachable from going in the front glass door, LOL... glad I can say I only fell into that category for 1 week!
