hey everyone. ive been lurking here for somtime. and i have also wanted to put in a pellet stove for a couple of years. so one is being delevered tomorrow. its the englander 55 shp10. nothing fancy its was 1427.00 shipped. its the same one that home depo sells.. which ofcourse the are out of online. they say its good for about 1500sq.the house is about 1200. not including the finished basment.n my last oil del. of 93gallons @4.75 per gallon. put me over the edge. so right now i have a full tank of oil and a new pellet stove waitiing to go in. my plan it to get 2 tons of pellets in the next week or so. i was quoted a price of 260 a ton here in brockton. is this the going price???

$260 per ton in your area doesn't sound too outrageous. You might find a little cheaper elsewhere, but not much. If that includes delivery, then it seems to be quite reasonable.
I'd get pellets as soon as you can. They are still out there, but availability can be hit or miss. Don't spend too much time shopping around. You may regret it.
Our local Aubuchon Hardware is having a sale on pellets beginning the 27th. (I believe that's the correct date.) They will be $250 per ton. Their normal price is $280. The "sale" price puts them only slightly more expensive than the local competition - but it's probably not that bad a price for the Boston area. The only catch is that they do not deliver.
Still... Their warehouse is full of them. So if anyone is having a hard time finding pellets, it may be worth checking them out. The only catch is that you can't order more than two tons per week.

Not true. While it's true for traditional wood stoves, pellets are a different breed. You don't burn pellets by the cord. You burn them by the pound. Pound for pound, softwood pellets have the same, if not more, BTUs.
I've heard varying opinions as to whether or not softwood pellets burn hotter. From what I've read, I believe they do. However, they certainly don't burn any less hot than hardwood.
