Anybody have any thoughts or feedback on battery back-ups sytems. I know Harman offers thet as an option on their stoves, but I am interestd in other independt companies rather than an add-on.

I bought an 800 watt inverter and will use my deep cycle boat battery or generator for back up.

The Mt Vernon Quad I have on order would require the Stove Sentry 503a which is $479 + S&H;. For that price wouldn't it be more useful to get a back up generator?

I keep my stove on a UPS throughout the winter for short outtages or
blinks in the power during storms. An inverter and battery would keep the
stove running much longer than a UPS, but I have a generator that I could
use for long term if needed.

First of all determine how reliable has your power been, if you have frequent outages than you should really get a small generator, you should really have one by now any way If you have reliability problems. Pellets run on electricity treat it like a furnace or boiler and not like a wood stove, how have you been handling outages with out the pellet stove? Asking that question most likely determinee weather you get a back up or not.

The difference between an oil boiler and a pellet stove is that when the power blinks or goes out ,the oil boiler will fire up when the power returns. If you do not have a back-up on the pellet stove it shuts down and you have to be there to turn it back on.........

I bought a 900w invert UPS. This model has an option to use external batteries to increase backup time. I could do what the Stove Sentry setup does with a little modification, but I'm going to use a small generator for now. The generator I'm using is a Yamaha EF1000is, a 1000w inverter generator. I like it's small size, clean power and great gas usage. This generator uses .66 gal of gas to provide 12hr of power to a pellet stove with the ignitor off. I'm looking into a a setup that would allow you to use both gas and propane (BBQ tank) to run it on. Propane would provide an increase to 85hr of power on one BBQ tank.

Well then two come to mind, you have a furnace/boiler to keep the house from frezing untill some one reset the pellet stove or invest in somthing that will just smoth the power from spikes/brownouts or a few minunits of power outage. But I would not put a whole lot of money into to a system that would run for hours on end, cost would be way to high for the return. Any way I will just palan to use my furnace as a back up to the pellet stove. If I need somtihg else I will get a small Honda gererator.
