Feeling the Heat

I just finished the complete installation of my Castile freestanding stove. The next step is to have it inspected by the building inspector and I'll be all set.

Now my little problem is this; The stove came with a cheap Luxpro thermostat (PSM30SA), but when I purchased my stove I also aksed for a wireless remote thermostat kit. What they sold me was an HPC model RCK-D. On the box it says "A/C Remote Transmitter/Receiver Kit for use with Millivolt Valves.

The instructions included with this remote thermostat say it's for the RCK-D, but the illustrations inside do not match the remote. Also, this unit is designed for Gas stoves/heaters - nowhere online (and I looked extensively) could I find any reference to them being used for pellet stoves. Also, in the wiring instructions it details attaching the wires to specific wires inside the gas control unit. I paid nearly $200.00 for this remote kit and as much as I'd like to use it, my intention now is to return it for a refund because it really is made for gas appliances.

I want to then purchase a good digital thermostat with set-back option, but I am not 100% sure what type/kind I am suppose to use. Should the one I pick up specifically say for "millivolt" applications? The back of my stove simply has 2 thermostat screws to attach to, so would just any digital thermostat work?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

Yes, most digital thermostats will work as long as they are self-powered (battery). I used a $39.99 LUX TX1500 and it worked great.

The remote control thing is a gimmick. I'd return it. I'm guessing, the last thing you need is another remote control. :) More important is locating the thermostat far enough away so that it is not directly influenced by the stove. I put it in the hallway around the corner.

Any millivolt thermostat will work, you just hook the two wires to the two terminals on the stove and it will work. Does not matter which one goes where.

Where do they connect on the thermostat and does the jumper come out?

The thermostat I am referring to is a wireless unit, looks like a tv remote and then there's the receiver that I understand sits next to or near the stove and plugs into an outlet there, then two wires come out of it which are suppose to be attached somewhere inside the GAS appliance wiring harness.

This unit is made for gas appliances.

thekid - on the TH connection, the open/close circuit for the stat.

Shortstuff - the two wires that come out is just an open/close circuit probably. Should be able to just hook one up to each TH connection on the unit.

I have a $40 wired theromstat since 1995, just replace the batteries every two years.
