I overheard a pellet burning veteran say that there is a difference between purchasing a pallet vs a ton of pellets . The difference being that there are 12 more bags on a pallet.
Since I`ve only ever seen a 50 bag pallet covered and shrink wrapped , I`ve got to think somehow he is misinformed.
Or was this possible in the earlier years of pellet sales?

Some companies pack more than a ton of pellets on to a pallet.

The other posters are correct. In addition, I've seen some offered
packed in 20lbs bags and also packed more than a ton on a pallet.

That said, the norm that you will find at most places is one ton
on a pallet = Fifty 40lb bags.
