i'm looking for an insert for our large main level.
we like the regency 3100, but it's too tall at 25" and i only have 26 3/4. and it's in the mid 2grand range.
we like the summit except for its price and we don't like cults
does anyone make a large insert in the $1500 range?

Probably lots of units you could consider - one of our active member has the Kodiak and likes it:

Closer to $1800 or so when all is said and done. I'll bet some Osburn, Drolet, etc. (SBI) and Napoleon models also are less than $2K.

The Quad 5100i is just over 22" high, 3 cu ft, big heater, but it will probably be priced like the Summit. Napoleon also makes a mid-sized insert.
I also have the Enviro kodiak 1700 and like it a lot. It was easy to install and the fan is a squirrel cage design and isn't loud to me. I got the all black with the extra large black surround to fill my extra large ZC fireplace. The cost last year for it was just under $1700 with the extra large surround.

i hear ya bro, i'd like to see about a 2.4 CF insert myself, its on the wish list. and web is correct , the 13-nci is the only wood insert we carry at this time. unless you can find a 24-jc some store may have squirrelled away we stopped building that unit in 03 i believe , but she was a hell of a stove in her day. if ya do find one , we do still support that model and will for years to come.(there are very few stoves built by ESW that we cannot support anymore, even if they havent been built for a decade or more)

also, how do you measure the fire box? is it only volume below the baffle? the reason i'm asking is that the online manual for my earth stove
advertises 2.9 cu ft. i measured it @2.3 cu ft(19.5dx17wx12h) below the baffle.

as for a 3.5 cf insert it would be a brute , but the precentage of fireplaces/hearths which could hold it and or meet code would be fairly small compared to a 2 and a half. which with out EBT could concievable do 2K sq ft with up to a 10 hour burn time, which should be all most homeowners would need. IMHO thats the "grail" for an insert , 2k ft with 10 hours is a good goal for a bigger box insert, that and about 1.0 GPH at testing

To my knowledge, the advertised cubic ft do not fall under any rules....in a brochure, etc.
In other words, they can print pretty much whatever they want....until someone sues 'em.

what i meant was i dont know if we measured including above the baffle or not , i'll check and so post. either way ,it is 3.5 cf one way or the other.

Why do you have a John Deere tractor? Was it the cheapest? Not by a long shot. So why are you taking a bargain basement approach to something that will be cooking at 1000 degrees, day after day in your living room? Get off the wallet and get a decent stove that matches that lawn tractor.
the john deere's a '93 model, older than my earth stove and less than what i've been quoted for a large insert.
i'll admit it, i'm tighter than a frog's ass.

Nothing wrong with Drolet, Osburn and other SBI stoves. That company and Napoleon (and Englander, etc.) make some decent stuff for very low prices. I would suggest, of course, studying the design on the particular model to make certain it fits your needs.
