Wood Pile Security

i don't think wood theft is a big problem. There have been a few people in here mention it a bit but not much.

Just put a sign up that says 10 pieces of wood in this pile have .45 bullets in them. Do you know which ones not to take?

Never gave wood theft a thought until the topic came up here a couple months back. I suppose if you C&S;at a remote site someone might take advantage but wood stacked by the your house...I dunno. I suppose neighborhood kids could take an armful for the occasional campfire.

I drilled three pieces and inserted test tubes with fox urine into the pieces. That way when they are burned they will stink up the home of a theif. I wouldn't want to hurt anyone . I give away way too much firewood for aomeone to steal from my labors

I have moved my DEC Police truck right next to my wood pile, instead of trying to "hide it" way in the back of my side driveway. Don't know if this will help or attract more people to the wood

We have never worried about it in the least. I highly doubt anyone would come back where we are to try to steal wood. There used to be a problem with theft in some of the neighborhood but word spread fast that most of us are well armed and know how to use those arms...and will if necessary.

In fact, I once scared he H out of a building inspector! What a fool he was. Seems he came to "inspect" the final job...but had another fellow with him. They drove into the driveway, but not all the way (we have a long driveway in the woods). They sat there looking and even took a picture but never got out of the car. When I stepped onto the porch with the rifle, aimed it at the car, you should have seen them leave. That guy could handle that car going fast in reverse gear! Naturally, I shot too! Not to hit the car, but to send a message. When it came out later who it was, I asked the fellow if he ducked. Said he crapped himself instead! Bet he does not pull that stunt any more. Simply put, we don't mess around.

Ya- go ahead and try it. See how far these two let you get- that's 22# (combined) of mean fur coming at you.

I was just thinking about security the other day. My wife told me someone stopped by asking about my wood pile - the unsplit stuff for next year. I guess they wanted it - and she said we were going to burn it. Then I dumped a cord or so of freshly split oak down there too. Then the light went on. My wood is all stacked closer to the road and almost not visible from the house during the summer. It would not take much to just stop by and take a load. Then again, I am on a road with not much through traffic so I stopped worrying.

I guess it all depends on your risk tolerance.

Not worried too much about the wood. I've been transplanting Yucca plants aound the property. What I'm more concerned about is punks tagging my wall, the bar is being raised, y'know..........

i was going to wrap my holz's in chicken wire as a deterent.....and
i am situating limbs and brush around the woods to kind of hide my piles from the view of the main road.
at $4.80 a gallon for oil, people will be looking for freebee's to burn.

Of all the things around my property that might be of interest to a thief, I'm probably the least concerned about firewood. Our property is fairly secluded, we have wood stored in 5 different locations, but all pretty close to the house. It would take a significant (and noisy) effort to remove wood in any quantity. I feel it's a lot more likely that I'd have gas or diesel siphoned & hauled off, or lose a vehicle to theft, something like that. Rick

To the original poster, I used to have an X10 flood light at another house years ago that could turn on a light or something on the inside of the house. Maybe there's a radio-based system now where they could alert you.

I try to mark my territory every evening. If this doesn't work I'll get a bigger marker.

I"m more worried about someone siphoning gas out of my car than a few pieces of firewood being stolen.

I have a wireless Dakota Alert system at the entrance of our wood yard that sends a signal to a base monitor at the house when some one enters. Works good.

In my area which is normally very quiet, they are taking anything of value.... at my property they might just bump into....

Our house is very secluded but we have motion flood lights on both garages- one under the house and the other is 400' up the driveway. Occasionally, we will have a car drive up our 1/4 mile driveway because they think its a road. The woodpile is next to the underhouse garage which is also an indoor/outdoor kennel for our four German Shepherds so they'll let us know if someone is around. The problem is deer, coyotes and other creatures tend to cross within 100' of the house to drink from our pond which the dogs bark at.
