Hi everyone I went to get some gas at BJ's Wholesale Cub in Auburn and while I was there I'd go and pick up a few things. What do I see on my way out but 10 tons of pellets. They had been unwrapped and they were selling them by the bag at $4.59. I asked if they had any wrapped and they said no. They are Pennington "Nature's Heat" Premium Hardwood. I opened a bag and dumped it into a big bucket and they did not seem to have more than normal fines and they had no long pellets.

Does anyone know if you are suppose to pay tax on pellets. I thought since it was home heating fuel you did not. Anyway at BJ's they charged me tax. I'll have to look on the web to see if I can find anything on the Maine gov site.

By the way you have to be a member to shop at BJ's or you pay a surcharge. So get a friend who is a member to go with you.

Can you post a picture of the pellets ?????

Pellets are non-taxable in Maine. I got charged for tax one time and came here and posted the same question. Someone in the forum linked me to an area of the maine.gov site that spelled it out in fairly simple terms that they are a non-taxable item.
You should be able to call the store and obtain a refund.

Having said this, my guess is that tehre will soon be a state tax on pellets and maybe even a federal one. The gubbermint is losing revenue left and right with all the crazies like us not wanted to buy lots of 4.00 per gallon gas...and 5.00 per gallon heating oil. They'll definitely find new pots to dip into.

After I had sifted the bag I got 1/2 cup of fines so I guess it's not the best in that regard, still less than 1%. It adds up fast and looking more closely to the pellets the majority are less than 1" but I did see one almost 1 3/4" long. The long one you see just above and to the right of the cup is 1 1/2" long. I also have NEWP and they are more uniform in size. I guess there better than they were last year on the fines, but still have some long ones. I guess if you stove can handle it the price is right. I did not see any junk in with the pellets like someone did last year. I'm going to keep it and see how it burns, if it burns like crap I see if they still stand behind their product.

I burned one ton of penningtons last year. They burned very similar to several other brands that I tried. Granted, one ton is a very small sample size, but I think that there is enough variation in the raw materials of any pellet plant to make it very difficult to generalize that brand X is "good" and brand Y is "bad".

Thank you. i need to find out how to post picture's.

Those look better than the Penningtons I burned last year. The ones I burned were abnormally dark. They made a TON of ash. It looks like Pennington has definitely changed the formula.

if i can get the pic up tonight,i will show the color difference's on pinnacles, natures heat & pres to logs. think positive i could use it.

on the left is pinnacle.the middle is natures heat. on the right is pres to logs.
