I have a Englander 25-PDV, Date of manufacture is 9/98. I have a chance to Burn 50/50 mix of Hardwood and Corn, Also the brother in law just got a job hauling Bulk Corn so I can get a break on Straight corn. Can my stove burn 50/50 or straight? Second question the straight corn has a 7% moisture factor will this effect the burn?, Lastly do I have to change the settings on my stove ( I now this has been a No,No in the past) Thanks.

that unit wasnt designed to effectively burn corn , at best maybe 25-30% can be burned (though its not what i would call pretty) no mixer means lots of clinkers, and the biggest thing in my mind, the augers "float" in the feed tubes, this can allow fuel to get caught under the flighting of the auger , with pellets its no biggie as the auger powered by the motor would just chop it and keep on going. now a kernal of corn would be similar to getting a rock caught there and could very well jam the auger , or worse, strip a gear in the motor bringing about a motor replacement. unless you are going to save a ton of money using corn , i'd avoid it

Mike,
What about the 50/50 pellet mix, I am under the impression that it is a Pellet that is 50/50 not 50 percent corn chunks and 50 percent pellet. Also what about burning pellets and just adding in some corn now and then ? Also how high would you go with Mositure % on Corn?

first , make sure its all pelletized, we brought some in thinking that was the case and when we opened the bag , it was wood pellets with whole kernal corn mixed in. as for mixing corn , i do not advocate it , but if you wish to try i'd try to keep below 14% drier the better. but be prepared to clean more often ,and keep an eye on carbon buildup on the auger tube , it will be there in a hurry with corn. this stresses the lower auger motor and could lead to premature motor failure. (not to mention the heightened possibility of a hard jam from a kernal getting wedged under the auger flighting)

if its ground and pelletized, other than much higher ash content i suppose (i have no data to work from on ground corn/wood pellets) it would do ok

The only reason I ask is because I have a chance at 50/50 Pellet at 190.00 a ton Bagged, I have to pick up. That is good considering that Pellets are ranging from 265.00 and Tractor supply to 305.00 at a local stove dealer. Some as with alot of posters on the forum I have people that can even begin to quote a price because they have no idea on where they are going to get them. Just a thought.

it is an attractive price , but if its whole corn mixed like we got , i'd stay away from it especially 50-50 mixed, thats just too much to burn effectively.

notice you are in new york , have you looked into the pellets direct or whatever its called that some of the members have been buying through? Zeta gets hers from there as does truepatriot. they seem happy with the service as well as the quality of pellets.
