No. I won't use any of this wood this year at all. It was just cut a week ago. So just a tad too wet to burn. I may just leave it in piles to dry once I get it split because it is only about 14 inches thick. I thought it was thicker last time I looked. So just getting ready for 2009-2010.

You can do almost everything you need with just a maul.

The only problem is that you need to develop an efficient and accurate stroke or you'll need 4X as many swings, I've split a lot of big ugly pieces of wood and don't own a wedge.

Accurate means hitting the same spot 2-3 times in a row and efficientt means you can deliver a good blow without wearing yourself out.

Practice, practice , Practice.

Yes the trick is to combine accuracy with power. I find that as one strikes the wood with really powerful smacks it gets hard to maintain accuracy, especially when one gets winded or frustrated. When just splitting easy wood it's much easier to strike in the same place twice.

Somewhat analogous to a golf swing - it's not how "hard" you swing it's "club head speed" which results in energy transfer.

Focus on speed of the maul head when it strikes the wood, not how hard you're working, and build your swing around that.

As in a golf swing, "muscling up on it" just slows down the impact speed.

I recently bought am 8 lb maul, and have been splitting on and off for a week or so. Last night as I was getting out of the shower, my wife said " your getting into great shape." I said "I wouldn't say Great." She replied "great shape, for you."
What the hell does that mean???

Means you need a bathrobe. Rick
