Anyone like my slate behind my gibraltor/keystoker?

, who wouldn't love that?) Rickyeah i bought this stove for 800 last year its huge.its a gibraltor stove but all the rear parts "blower,components" are keystoker.everyone says i got a pretty good deal.i know we keep it down low.i live in lebanon county in some sort of a city enviroment but not the city a row home and everyone including me has oil furnaces.all my nieghbors pay thousands a heating season while i pay about 300 to heat for a season.i love rice coal,just love it.

the slate tile looks great ,if you realy want the colors to 'pop' put 2 coats of stone sealer on it.
stone sealer?will that make it look shiny or glossy?ill have to check that out.how do you apply it?it is runny?thanks for the idea
I sealed my slate tiles before installing them, so the 'runniness' of the sealer wasn't an issue. I didn't want even a semi-gloss, I just wanted to enhance the colors. HD had something for the job, but I can't remember the name. It came in a spray bottle, so that should make it easier for you to do since your slate is installed.
Your installation is quite nice...how wide are your groutlines? I went groutless, because that is my preference, but they seem to barely show on your installation. I like the running bond, and would have done that pattern, but I was sawless and on a tight time-line as our stove install was coming up fast. This is the result of sealing the tiles:

i would have prefered groutless in the end or a darker grout.im going to look into the sealer definatley.i still wipe it down from time to time because it still seems like there is a haze or something on the stone yet.and just think wife wanted to sponge paint this wall lolol.booooo

thank you very cheap to do i think i paid 85 total for the stone and grout and adhesive cost me another 50 at most.my wife for years didnt want anything to do with a stove in the house now she runs it better then me and brags about what we save a year.we went from 1800 plus a year to 300 a year to heat.
That is awesome slate work! Great job. I love the color of the stone against the yellow walls, it really makes the stone stand out. If you're looking to make the grout darker, I believe they make some kind of stain for grout which you could apply before the sealant (if you haven't applied it already!). We have similar looking tile throughout our kitchen and living room and went with a dark grey grout which helped to blend everything.
the sealer will make the stone a bit glossy . the more coats the glossyer it will be as far as it being runny it goes on with a roller and is not a problem

very nice, one question, is the transition of your stove pipe thru the slate (and ? combustionable substrate) safe, should there not be a thimble of some sort?

That is so sweet. Looks fantastic. You must be the hero in your house for pulling off the design and installation. The colors in the stone go great with the wall color. The savings on heat is just icing on the cake. Congrats
Nice!! I'm just finishing my hearth with the same slate. I went with a 3/8" gap and did jet black grout. I finished half of it today and the dark black grout lines really bring the colors of the slate out nicely. Because its a floor I'm going to use a sealer. I need to get going so I can get that stove in place and fired up.
pipe doesnt run through slate we cut tiles to fit around it.the pipe that high and where it goes into the wall never gets hot,just warm.i have an unbelievable draft because we tapped into existing chiminey that was used for our furnace in the basement.i just wish i knew how to make slate brighter without alot of gloss

I think they both have sealers that have a matte finish. Some are advertised as color enhancing that should bring out the color a bit more. I'm going to seal my floor tomorrow with a product from aldon that seals and enhances. They say if you want the "wet" look to keep adding more coats. I don't really want the wet look but I'm going to put on a coat or two to see how it looks. There are a few forums out there for slate and tile like johnbridge.com that have a lot of good info and advice. Just google slate and sealer and you should find more than you can read!
