Well, I've been lurking here for a couple of months and have learned a great deal! We are putting an insert in our first floor family room of a 2,500 sq ft house. The room is 12X20 and is open to the adjacent eating area and kitchen. Before getting my wife involved, I was set on a Pacific Energy Summit (or Pacific) insert. In an experience similar to some I have read here, when my wife looked things over, she preferred the Jotul 550 Rockland. The problem is that the mantel meets all clearance distances for the PE's, but not for the Rockland. My wife is not keen on the heat shield.

So, it looked like we were going with a PE, until we were told we would have to wait into next year for one (after initially being told we could get one in early November). The same dealer does have a Rockland in stock. I mentioned the issue with the heat shield. My wife told him it would be OK if it was something we could remove when the insert is not in use. He was not sure if the shield Jotul makes is easily removable, but that he might be able to make a heat shield that is. He is currently looking into this, but since this forum is such a wonderful resource, I was wondering if anyone has encountered this or has any ideas. I have seen a few pictures of the heat shield Jotul makes, but I have seen any other options for redirecting the heat (maybe because there are none). Thanks!

Jim

JJ,

I have the Rockland (and love it so far). Sorry, cannot help on the heatshield question as my mantel exceeds the distance requirements...

I just ordered a heat shield for my Kennebec and according to the manual it attaches to the surround with a couple bolts. I can't imagine the Rockland would be much different and it shouldn't be much more than taking the surround off to attach/detach it - which is what I plan to do when it's not in use.
