I have a Quadrafire Mt Vernon AE that it vented horizontally through the wall. I have found that frequently there are a few sparks are pushed out through the exhaust. Now if there was a snow drift below I don't mind, but lately there have been a lot of dead leaves, plus don't want the insurance company driving by and seeing any lonely sparks flying out the side of the house.

I have installed some aluminum screen to the horizontal vent cap but can I include a aluminum screen within the unit itself? Any Ideas?
Thanks for any help.

Please think about putting in a 3' vertical rise. The screen you installed will do more harm than good.

I would have done that to begin with but it sits 3' below a decorative window and a focal point along the side of the house. The screen I installed was a hardware cloth 1/4 " spaced. Just enough to hopefully catch or knock out a spark if it where to hit it.

Mine throws a few sparks, no fire yet, they die out as soon as they hit the ground.

I have not had mine too long but I have watched mine every so often and most go out in the first 6" or so after they come out, I have only seen one piece even make it to the ground. Mine is @ 39" from grade and I do try to keep the leaves from beneath it, because it is in the only spot around the house where the leaves collect. I probably would have had mine installed with a short vertical rise but it wasn't suggested by the stove company and I didn't know anything about these stoves at the time. Don't take this wrong, Don't think it is like a sparkler on the 4th of July, you rarely see any fly ash come out, at least that's the case with mine.

Put down a couple of large size patio blocks, the 18x18's or 24x24's. That's recommended in some of the installs.

Bingo put down concrete blocks just under the exhaust. There is little worry about a fire but better safe than sorry. If it's continues to be a concern then but a large shallow metal bucket or a throw away alum tray with water in it under the vent this will ease your fears.

I hear ya and I agree with you, but I did have it properly and profesionaly installed by a quadrafire rep so really after the fact I see sparks then who is to blame. I think that what I'm going to do is install a t-with 6" rise and vertical vent cap to be used while there are leaves then replace with standard horizontal during non burning season and at the moment I'm wetting down the area below before I burn.
Thanks for advice from all.
