I have ordered a polybrush and cleaning rods for my chimney. I have a prefab fireplace with the open or close damper. My question is can i close the damper clean the chimney and then open the damper and catch the creosote in a metal bucket?

Technically...yes you could do that, though I would expect a big *poof* of dust/creosote when you open the damper and the bulk material falls into your bucket.

My preference for cleaning would be to pick a day when you have a slight convection up the flue (cold outside, warm inside)leave the damper open, close the fireplace doors or possibly tape a piece of plastic temporarily over the opening, then scrub the flue from the top down. Wait 5-10 minutes for the dust to settle, then open the fireplace and gently brush up the creosote. The flue convection will help pick up any very light dust and deposit it outside instead of in the house. As an alternate method, simply leave the creosote in the fireplace and let it burn up with the next fire. This is what I do in my insert.

Thanks for the suggestion.I'll try closing it off and let it fall into the fireplace then burn it with the next fire. Appreciate the help. I've been on here reading for a while now but just registered so i could chat with you folks in here. Seems like a great group to hang out here with.

Just speaking for myself, I got the poly brush because I heard when using a metal brush on a stainless steel chimney flue, the chimney doesn't last as long so I want mine to last as long as possible. Just my 2 cents.
