Feeling the Heat

West Texas
For the past several weeks I've been hunting an Oakwood to go have a look. Well, those days are gone! Nobody even carrys this stove in the State of Texas (that I've found so far), and this includes the "Authorized Dealers" I've searched for on the Harman site. SO, the next question is:

Does anyone know where I might look for one? One poster said a dealer in Michigan or Wisconsin had two, but that's a tad far from West Texas--shipping could approach the stove price! I'm planning to contact that one if I don't get a closer/better option. I know, I know, I'm in the totally WRONG part of the country to expect anyone to carry wood stoves, much less the one I want! However, I still need one and the Oakwood appears to have all my "eggs in the same basket".

Since y'all are everywhere, please send me possible sources for an Oakwood and I'll check 'em out. I've used all the zip codes for about 600 miles around here trying to find a dealer who has one, but no luck so far. I don't even mind a day's drive to pick it up, if necessary.

Assuming I find one, I'm gonna be at a substantial disadvantage for dealer assistance and service, since the nearest (allegedly)authorized dealer is 2 hours away, BUT they don't stock or carry Oakwoods--BUT say they can get one. When I called and asked, they said they don't and can't. So, back to square one.

Suggestions appreciated!

--but LOTS of wood (estimated at north of 1 million pounds)

The shop in Hampton Falls NH has one for 1800. Brand new, granted shipping probably isn't cheap.

1.8K for an Oakwood!
Wow that is a very good price.
When I was looking brand new Oakwoods were around 2.3K and that was before the yearly price increase.

That's where I bought mine last year for $1650, they went up a little.

The stove retails for around $2200, shipping shouldn't cost more than $200, I think I would make a call to New Hampshire if it were me, they are great folks too.

i'd call Harman and ask where you can get one.
tell them you are really interested, want to see one prior to pulling the trigger, can they set something up and send one down to a local dealer for you to
view. .. and of course tell the dealer so it dont get sold out from under you.
otherwise tell them......... "for all the hours i've spent traveling looking for this, i'd rather just go buy another stove.... but i really want yours, can you help?"

Tried to find a number for Harman--couldn't. Sent 'em a message a few days ago asking them to call me direct. No response yet.

Thanks! Will call them now!

Called Harman and finally got someone named Tony. Very helpful. Gave me six possible dealers to check on, some even here in Texas!! Will set about to call all of them and find a stove, but will also pursue other possibilities. Thanks for the help. We may be warm this winter even yet.

If anyone thinks of anything else, please PM me and I'll get right on it.

You beat me to it BJN644. The prices we paid were quite a deal. Still contemplating that cooking grill for mine.

Gotta have the grill, I just cooked a couple of rib-eyes on mine tonight. I bet the neighbors were trying to figure out where the smell of BBQ steak was coming from.

I have to look at that grill. One thing I've been wondering, how hard is it to pull out, after you done cooking?
I'm not a fan of the front load.
Oh and my oakwood is cruising tonight. A good load of dead oak and dry cherry and she's holding around 425 with the damper closed.

"Wood" y'all knock off with the grilling talk? You're making me hungry. Gonna have to go butcher me up one of these calves I got back here. Once I get a stove, it should be a ton of fun cooking on that grill. Doesn't the smoke and all get sucked down into the stove from the draft into the open top? Kinda like a JennAir cooktop, huh?

A shop called SOS in Hackettstown, NJ carries the Oakwood Harmon. I forget the price they are asking and they have them in stock. Nice stove.

Dill - they will order that grill for you in Hampton - 38 bucks. Has a removable handle so you just plop it in and go. Very little smoke, but the great thing is you can close the top with it in! Then toss in a few apple twigs in the front for smoke... it kicks a charcoal grill's ass just the way a charcoal grill kicks a gas grill's ass! If you want to come over and check it out, no prob - I'll let you know a good time.

I think that $1800 Oakwood is a floor model, not for sale - at least it wasn't when I asked this summer. Going rate new is $2300 or so.

Yup, works just like a Jennair, but no electricity required. You can cook with the top open or closed depending on how much heat you need, damper stays open. When your done leave the grill in for a while and it gets a self cleaning.

Here's a link for those who don't know what it looks like. It comes with a removable handle not shown in the picture.
Oakwood grill

Hey Tex, the number is (603) 926-2084

Branch, they don't stock the grills right? I have to order them?

Oh and it was actually cruising between 475 and 500 from 8 to 11 with only 2 med cherry splits and 1 oak round about 4 inch. And the air about 3/4. I love when it gets cold the draft starts really working.

$1800 for an Oakwood in NH? I thought you guys were my friends, why didn't anybody tell me when I was posting here about the Oakwood last July? I paid the $2300 here in CT, and I was scared into it because the dealer said the prices were going up and soon they would be GONE.

I got the grill, but haven't used it yet. This weekend for sure!

Thanks, I'll ring them up today.

BTW, did y'all install a chimney liner for your stoves? If so, how did you insulate them? Looks like I'm gonna be putting a 6" SS inside an 8" double wall SS flue pipe arrangement and was just wondering how one goes about insulating and IF it's done. Sounds like a job! Is it a DIY job or should a pro do it?

I use the front load to get a fire started and to clean the glass. That's about it. When I was looking for stove I thought I wouldn't like the top load and now I can't imagine not having it.

Also, the price disparity amazes me!! I bought my stove in Hampton for $1600.00 too and it was not a floor model as I had to unpack it from the shipping crate.

I just had a chimney built using a rigid 6" SS liner, the mason used a vermiculite based pour in insulation called Everguard. You mix it with water and it's kinda of like a spongy mortar mix.
