What am I doing wrong with avatar

I've read the stickies for photos here, but can't upload my avatar. It says it's in the wrong format - but it is jpeg which should work. So since we're in the photo gallery anyway, here is a photo of my new Regency R90 fireplace. I seem to be able to upload this photo - but can't get the same photo in avatar form uploaded. I should have it small enough - about 5kb.

Holy Smoke! It worked!! Thank you so much. Thanks for the compliments - I love my dogs, I love my fireplace. Wasted so many years with a prefab conventional. This morning the house was still 80 degrees and it was either open the windows or turn on the a/c - I opened the windows. However it isn't extremely cold yet - we have colder temps to come, but the Regency will be up to the task I'm sure.
