Good Sealant for stove pipe?

I have some very large gaps between my stove pipe and stove outlet collar (which the stove pipe is inserted). The installers used a gasket cement to fill these gaps (Rutland Black Fiberglass Stove Gasket Cement).

Though I have yet to get the stove really hot (other issues) the stuff hardened, broke and dissapeared within a few fireings. How do you guys seal successfully this connection?

You might fill it with rope gasket + cement & maybe a trim collar for a more finished look.
 
I tucked some small rope gasketing in mine. You can tuck it in there pretty snug for a good seal (remove the cement first though).
