Last night I went down to check on the furnace, and it was 2-3" of smaller size coals (nearing the end of the cycle). When I stoked it, all the sudden there was this shower of sparks, the sparks were really small not like when say something pops. it was like one of those sparklers on the 4th of july. the wood was a mix of sugar maple and cherry.

What the hell was it?

haha, yep, I get the same in my woodstove from time to time, never knew what caused it, seems to be sudden influx of air when I open the door, and poke around, then WHAMMO, pyrotechnics, flyin out the side door, slappin' at pants to put 'em out, hopin' the floor ain't burned, haha, yep, been there, had that!

Termite turds exploding!

Nothing to worry about except when it happens, put out the sparks. Happens to everyone sooner or later. That is one reason for needing non-combustible surfaces close by the stove.

If find I get those sparks most often with ash and beech. Interesting you noticed it with maple and cherry.

Sometimes that happens in wood furnaces when there is a fire inside. I've never seen it happen when the furnace is cold.

Yes Backwoods . I think the turds reached their breaking point due to the intense heat and had a big sudden release of all their pent up methane gas. Millions of them just exploded and all let loose all at once. Yeah thats it, bursting termite turds

my first airplane had a mageto that was called a shower of sparks. Electrifying

Dried up mud/dirt makes sparks, maybe what I think is dried mud/dirty is really termite poops?

Mulberry often throws lots of little sparks like that. Makes it fun and a little scary to rake the coals around during a reload.
