Two of my coworkers bought them. They are a mix of hardwood and softwood. One had a lot of ash and she requested the dealer they bought them from take them back and refund her money--which they did. Other has Mt Vernon and says they burn good in that. I think $289/ton is atrocious price. Here, oil is cheaper. May just have to try some and see how they burn in your stove.

I have 4 tons in my basement!!
They give off very good heat but leave quite a bit of ash behind.
I think we over sized the stove so it may not be burning efficiently.

I am not planning on burning these next year.
I bought from the first dealer that had pellets.
$314/ton delivered. Seems high but oil is still $2.60/gal here.

Athens Pellets are not premium quality. They give off far too much ash to be considered that grade. So the 289 price is very high for standard industrial grade pellets.

I would buy a bag or two before buying a large amount. I bought 4 tons of Athens, because that was what was available. My experience with them are they leave too much ash per bag, and require cleaning the stove every couple of days. Read the threads on here, and you will see what is going on as there is a lot of problems with them.

I won't put one pellet of that stuff in my stove. I gave away about 60-70 lbs. of that stuff to someone to burn in their wood stove.

I have a ton of them, they're really small pellets, the longest being a half inch. They give off some nice heat, and seem to be pretty on par with the others for ash, maybe a little more. Ive yet to get a clinker on them.
I have noticed that Ill get the occasional bag that is reeeeeeealy light in color, with the rest being about on par with the others Ive test burned.

6-7 cups of ashes per bag regardless of damper setting.
Agreed, you will never see a clinker and no soot but there is ash EVERYWHERE after a few hours of burn time. Can't be great for the stove. We have to clean ash bin every other day, and burn pot twice a day. Miserable.

Last year I burned a lot of Somersets, Energex, Penningtons, and a few bags from Ashland, and a few bags from Corinth.

Picked up 2 tons of Athens this spring, have burned about 1/2 ton so far between my Breckwell and Enviro.

They've burned no better and no worse than most of the other pellets I've burned. I'll buy more of them if they continue to be competitive on price, I like the fact that they're made in Maine. Also, they seem to burn pretty even as they're shorter in length and go through the auger more consistently.

IMHO -- overall, the brand makes very little difference, it's a lot more about what the mill was using for raw materials at the time your pellets were produced.

Just one opinion, though.

A new pellet manufacture that has never seen a winter, needs to prove it self to pelleteers.

I just picked up a bag of Pennington pellets from Wally World. $6.00
I will be burning these next so I can compare to Athens.
It is about 18 out so I may be pouring them in this evening.

As I have said before, We get good heat out of the Athens pellets
but also see that the ash left behind would be a problem if not cleaned
from the burn pot frequently.

75 downstairs and 66-68 upstairs!!
Love it!!

To be blunt they are crap. There are many threads on here one of which is VERY long about these pellets, and all the problems are the same. Too much ash and soot. In my stove the will fill the burn pot with ash to the very top in about 10 hours. It does this no matter the damper setting and makes an awful mess of the stove. Some folks I know burning them will burn them ok, but dirty, mine wont really burn them at all. I would try a bag or two first and then if you cant get anything else.... There are enough complaints on here to make the few glowing reviews suspect.

I think the pellets are crap. I have about a half a ton left and will not buy more. They clog everything with ash. I am mixing them half and half with green team right now until they are gone and then I will burn my 3 tons of green team. The green team burn perfectly in my P68.

I am still waiting for a reply from them. (Athens)
I am not happy with the Athens pellets but that was all that was available.
I will start shopping early for next year so I can get pellets that give ample heat and not leave a trail of ash.
If Athens does not change their formula/process, they will probably see a drop in sales.

I hate that our Maine companies are producing bad products. Athens is a new company but Corinth has produced a good product in the past and I am reading some bad reviews on them also. I really want to support Maine business but at what price?

I had a couple bags of Corinth Pellets that were left overs from last year and they burned almost as bad as the Athens Pellets. I managed to get two bags of this years Corinth Pellets and they burn great. Good heat and pretty clean.
