A tower fan on low hardly makes any noise at all. low is really all you need with a tower fan too. they move alot of air. It has been my experience thus far that moving the cold air to the stove is easier. The cold air is then replaced by warm heated air from the stove.

There's this one from Home Depot:

ENTREEAIR Door Frame Fan

Model RR100

$21.96/EA Each

I actually bought one of these today at HEP sales not even thinking. However I don't think it is extremely loud when it is hung up. If it works I can deal though.

Chris, let us know what you think after you've used it for a while. Most of the reviews I've seen mention that they are very noisy.

UPDATE: well after using this fan for a few weeks, I don't think it is loud at all. HOWEVER....I can hardly feel air movement. I have to put my hand right in front ( about 2 inches) of the fan just to feel air coming through. So as far as air movement goes...

what about getting air up the stairs - blow it down or up? floor or ceiling mount ? seems like it might be a case where you blow it up..

I am trying to get the hot air upstairs. The stove is against the far wall where the staircase is, and actually blows, hits the wall of the staircase and goes round and does well on the first floor. I looked at on of the through wall units, which would put it cieling level first floor and floor level upstairs. Im not sure if I blow the hot from the cieling level of floor one to the floor of level 2 if this makes sense, or if Im better trying to shoot the cold air floor level down into the dining room hoping that it will bring the warm air up the stairs. The stairs dont open right up to the cieling either, there's a two foot wall before it opens up to the stair opening.
Thoughts?

Thought this might interest some of you, a 10" wall mountable fan for $19.99. Just add another item for $5 more for free S&H;:

http://www.amazon.com/Soleus-Air-FT...4?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1227116658&sr=1-4

Some of the Amazon highlights:

* 10-inch silver-and-blue three-speed oscillating table fan with wall-mount option
* Fan head pivots 180 degrees; three speeds and oscillator toggle switch
* Sturdy, silver-tone plastic with blue accents; modern, asymmetrical design
* 2-hour timer for automatic turn-off; wall-mounting brackets; 5-foot power cord
* 115 volts; measures 14-1/2 by 14-1/2 by 6-1/2 inches; one-year warranty

I think most say to send the air down like a cold air return. that is why I can't decide if it would be worth it to try and blow it down a staircase.

I purchased the entreeair door frame fan, installed it and thought it looked pretty good. Unfortunately I agree with what others have said it's noisy, and worse than that it's useless. Returned it, and replaced it with a $10.00 Honeywell 9" inch desk top fan. I drilled 4 holes in the base and hung it in the corner of the door frame. Doesn't look all that bad, but it's pretty quiet (you can hear the movement of the air even on low) and it really helps move the air and balance the heat in my home.
