I was just at Walmart the other day and they were selling 40 pound bags of pellets for $5 a bag, which would be $250 a ton.

Mine are about $3.80 per bag when I buy a 1.2 ton pallet.

The local hardware store is selling them for $7.49 a bag or $345 a ton. Unless you're just a casual user burning a couple of bags for ambiance, it doesn't make sense to pay that with oil being the price it is - $2.39/gal locally.

The very best price for pellets that I've recently seen in Fairfield, CT is at Lowes & Home Depot at $300 a ton plus delivery of $65.00.
IMHO, with HHO costing about $2.25 a gal, I think the pellet industry is going to be in trouble. Sure I realize that some of you will burn pellets at a break even, or even at a loss, and once again I respect your reasons. Keep the money in the USA, a smaller carbon footprint, don't send our dollars to the unfriendlies, but most people(me included) that purchased pellet stoves attempted to save money to keep their families comfortable. If the pellet industry can't figure out how to reduce their costs I'm predicting you will see lots of stoves for sale on CL, and many stove shops, and pellet mills closing in the near future. Personally I'll never sell my stove, and will always have at least a couple of tons of pellets in my garage. I think it's wise being a pellet pig that has a plan B.

Lowes in Mid Michigan are selling them for 5.97 and no break for 1 ton. They stated that they are short of pellets and will not give a sale price this year.

Here in central MA (and northern RI) retailers are selling pellets at $300/ton. It's a bit suspicious since none of the places I've called or visited is selling the same brand of pellets - yet all are charging the same price. A couple places are selling pellets at app. $375/ton. A particular $375/ton seller in Bellingham, MA, has had plenty of pellets in stock all season - no shortage of $375/ton pellets.

There is no shortage of pellets as long as you are willing to pay at least $300/ton. I visited a local HD (Auburn) and Lowes (Milford) this weekend; both stores had pellets (different brands) and both stores were charging the same price: $300/ton.

Online prices (http://www.woodpelletprice.com/index.html) are all around the same price: $300+ per ton plus delivery. AND most places have pellets in stock.

Here in NW Wisconsin, you can buy them for around $4.24/bag.

Most of us in the country buy LP for heating fuel. The problem with this winter is we are not seeing the drop in fuel prices. Most (not all) LP suppliers locked in their prices over the summer before they went any higher. They, along with all others, did not see the price drop coming.

So pellets are still a better buy for me.

Also, as I have said before, with my old house and the jury rigged forced air vents, the pellet stove does a much better job heating the house the the furnace does.

I paid $345/ton delivered in the beginning of November. Bought 1.4 tons, and that's all they would sell me. Now I'm glad. They're trying to hold onto those high prices because they're purchase price was high too, but once they realize that people are just going to burn oil instead, they'll start dropping prices. They have to. I'll buy my pellets next spring if I have to, because they'll need to clear out the garden centers for plant space...THEN they'll go on sale ;)

I am waiting as long as I can before I make my next pellet purchase. I purchase my P61A-2 in June and it was installed the first week of November. With it came a ton of pellets. The pellets (New England Wood Pellets) have a lot of fines. I get a face full of sawdust when I pour pellets into a bucket. I had a Whitfeld stove back in the late 90's and I do not remember this huge amount of sawdust. So, I am looking around and there is no problem finding pellets, you just have to swallow hard and be ready to pay $300/ton. Obviously, next year I will get into an early buy program, but for now I am wondering if/when the price of pellets in MA will go down this winter. I do not believe for a second that there is a shortage.

I bought some 2 tons at Home Depot in Southern NH, in the middle of the summer (when oil just peaked) and was able to get them for 250 a ton, then I also had a 10% off coupon so I was able to get them for $225. within a week or two they shot up to 300 and maybe even higher, I just checked last week and they are back down to 275, although I think they are a different brand then mine.

I made out with the Pellets, but I also filled my dead empty oil tank in the middle of the summer for $4.39 a gallon. this is also when they were predicting $200 barrel of oil by the heating season. You win some you lose some

I agree with you guys, I think you'll see pellet prices drop significantly after this heating season. The only way I see these high prices staying in place is if oil shoots way up again.

Supply and demand :)

With oil prices cheap...those pellets are just going to sit there until someone blinks. I'm sure the pellets that HD and Lowes have now they paid a premium for before the crash, and they don't want to lose money, so they're playing the waiting game :)

Me too :)

And I bet I'm more patient than they are ;*)

Agree.

Pellet prices are $280-$300 / ton right here now.

However, when I buy again in the spring and "pig up" my 6 tons for next winter, I will come back up here and eat my hat live on the internet if I average more than $225 per ton.

Will you need salt, pepper, or maybe some ketchup?

I'm going to fill up my oil tank, since it sounds like prices are starting to go back up just a bit, and anything under $2.50 sounds like a bargain after what we've been through.
I'll have a full oil tank, and 1.4 tons of pellets, and I'm going to sit back and play the heat-your-house game for the next few months. If pellets come down, I'll buy more. If not, I'll just nurse my pellet pile an oil tank along until something gives.

Sound like a reasonably thought out plan

Sounds like a good plan Lobstah.

Holding at $5.08/bag here at Homer D's.

TSC is a buck higher, and I've seen them as high as $7 at the grocery stores.

Still much cheaper than propane, which is my other option.

I have different prices here in Topeka. I have asked around and get 199 to 254 a ton. I have recently started mixing 60 percent corn and 40 percent pellet together. I bought corn at the co-op for 6 dollars a 100 pounds. You have to get your own storage barrels.

Pellets are getting hard to get here there are none to be found. A local feed store where I am buying them said 2 weeks for a shipment. At east I got my name on the list.

$300 a ton for pellets, I filled the oil tank this week.

I purchased 5 tons of CleanFire pellets from Pelletsales.com...Excellent pellets in my opinion..I paid $245 a ton delivered in May..I plan to buy in the late spring again, after demand drops...I also bought five bags each of 4 other brands and they seemed OK. However, the CleanFire pellets had nice wood smell to them right outta the bag and very little sawdust..Pretty happy and would recommend them to others...People at PS.com were very nice and believe me, I asked a quite a few questions..

Pellets 300 ton here. Oil $2.11 Gallon. Pellet Prices need to come down. Just filled Oil Tank here will not be buying any Pellets at $300 ton.
