On the subject- I hope the person that gave you that advice wasn't your personal physician or tax lawyer. It won't work. There's no real substitute for dry wood and good burning procedure.

. . . or ferrets. :) ;)

In answer to your question: Yes, it probably will work about as good :) Not saying it will work, just work as good as the advertised products.

I heard about the aluminum can thing years ago but never tried it.

Yup. I'ts a widespread belief around here but my zip code ends in kentucky. I have a neighbor who burns a 12 pack a week or so (depending on his mood). I not sure it helps anything but we don't have recycle trucks either so I guess it keeps it out of the landfill. Hell, maybe I'll give it a try.

I wouldn't get up on that 200 yr. old tin roof for my own endentured lumber jack.(god knows he hasn't ever looked down that old stone mud daubed unlined chimney).

blujacket- I assume it’s creosote. That or a Mexican toothpaste- “El Creasto”

Funny you mention that I heard that squirting mexican toothpaste on the fire will clean up your chimney and make the inside pearly white. Maybe thats what he meant to say. Anybody else ever try mexican toothpaste on their fire??

I wouldn't try it in a Catalytic stove, might poison the cat...

Otherwise, I doubt that it would do much good, but probably wouldn't hurt anything either (Just like all the other "magic powder" and so on products) - as others have said, no substitute for proper burning practices and regular MECHANICAL cleaning...
