I know we have a lot of new stove owners on the board. After seeing what happened this year with pellets, when do you plan on getting next heating season's pellets? Will you prepay or cash on delivery?

I guess I must be nuts, Muss, but I'm going to buy them as soon as they are available, and are at least as cheap as the last ton was...$239.50/ton for Lignetics. It might be 3 months, or 3 weeks...who knows.

I'm not tellin. But mosts ppl will buy their's in March or April & pick 'em up or have them delivered in June/July. It's going to cause the same thing to happen as what happened last summer, possibly worse, because new building construction has slowed to nearly nothing reducing the lumber demand. So prices might be higher going in early vs later/closer to fall. We'll have to see what the market looks like in the 2nd quarter of 2009. Should be interesting. If prices are above $250 a ton, we might burn oil next year.

I will buy when the price drops below $230.00..... There are other factors and variables to consider but price is the main thing.... Also, I will pick them up and bring them home myself...... Cash & Carry............
If I see a deal I will buy next years now. Anything that I like for pellets in the $200 +/- $25 or so price range I will buy 4 to 5 tons when I see them available. If the deal is really good I will buy even more. This is all assuming that my stove will stop falling apart lol.

Last year when the prices were running up with the price of oil a couple of dealers broke ranks and sold pellets (Lignetics&American;Wood Fiber) for less than $200 per ton. I bought 4 tons. I will start checking prices in June with a $200 per ton target. Fuel oil may have some appeal but I suspect oil prices will rebound because the oil people have the power.
i will set aside some cash in spring for pellets but i know i too will be watching the market closely. Oil seems to be dropping like lead and may be super cheap next year. i know i will buy at least one ton of pellets even if i go with oil so i can heat my family room nicely next winter. but all in all it really depends on the market. but damn, having a choice is the best decision i have made in my short homeowners' experience thus far

We bought 4 tons of "ATHENS" pellets.
They do have higher ash but they also heat very well.
I guess Harman was right about being able to burn/adjust for different types of pellets.
Right now we are averaging 1 bag/day(Heating the whole house!!). If we continue
at this rate, we should have a ton left over!!
4 tons=200 bags/30 days= 6.7 months!!
If it does work out that way, we should start shopping for 2 tons around mid April.
In the meantime, I want to try other brands.

I have been driving around and i see many folks just have pallets of them on thier porches, mmmmm i say why buy.... I am going to begin to stock up 1 bag at a time before they burn them all. At least they should cover them... ;-0

I'm looking for deals year round, and will pick up 3 tons when the price is right. By "right", I am thinking 750 for 3 tons delivered.
My guess is that I'll catch that deal in the March-May period.

My dealer, whom I trust, highly recommended LG pellets when I purchased the stove this summer. They are the only brand he sells and swears by them. I took his advice and have been extremely happy with them, although I have not burned anything else and have nothing to compare them to. However, after reading all of the comments on this board about the quality of different brands and how it differs from stove to stove, what I have works and I have no intention of switching unless something radically changes with the product. I bought my supply of 3 tons for $239 a ton in early summer, and I will work with my dealer as time goes along to buy next years supply at the right time whether it is February, April or August. He does not play the pre-pay game. When you buy your pellets, they are from stock and he will either deliver them or you can pick them up.
As discussed in another thread...Mer Lynch analyst said oil could go sub-$25/barrel with this crash, which would put gasoline under $1/gal.
HHO would be down under $1.50/gal at that rate.
Pellets would have to be pretty cheap if that happened. I just filled the tank yesterday at $2.179/gal.
It's going to be very interesting to see where prices go over the next 6mos.

The way oil prices are going we could see $1.50 gal for HHO next year, if that is the case I would have to get my pellets for around $175 a ton to break even, if I can't I'll be filling the 2 - 275 gal. oil tanks in my basement, would rather burn pellets, but for me it's all about the $$$$ savings.

Traditionally, if my memory (which ain't what it useta be) serves me correctly, deisel fuel and HHO until 2 - 3 years ago were always cheaper than gasoline. Everybody is climbing onto the speculation (futures) bandwagon, here, seems to me, but, then again, that's just my opinion. Seems to me like that's what started this whole mess in the first place. As the renowned Dr. Hunter S. Thompson said, "Buy the ticket, take the ride". Fortunately, I'm too old to play the futures market, don't know if I have a future, can barely make it to the local market.
