I have two main wood scrounge sources. My best source is a friend that lives about a mile down the road. He built a small cabin on his property and cleared a lot of trees. Most of the wood I'm burning this season is from him. My second source is from another guy down the road that owns a campground where used to have a site. A tree service dumps their unwanted wood in his bone yard and I can take whatever I want.
Here's some of the wood my buddy has set aside for me.

He has a lot of other trees for me that haven't been gathered yet including three big Osages.
He calls me the wood whore.

My best wood scrounge was a cache of about 15 cords that were pretty big stuff. Came from a golf course in the middle of town, and none of the towns people had equipment to deal with it. Made a deal with the golf course and they delivered it to my house for basically gas money. That was this past summer and I still have about 5 cords to play with. Hard/soft maple, red oak, white ash and a few other varieties. Mostly good stuff.

12-15 cords from a church that had cleared woods for a scocer field. . Over 50 truck loads in 3 months.

Mine all come in smaller scores anywhere from .5 to 2 cords. I actually prefer it that way in that i can space out my work load.

Back in 1980, a wicked August thunder storm took down a lot of of trees in our community. Several mature walnut trees came down on city land. We called the city forester to ask permission to take them. For liability reasons, he could not give an OK. However, he said that he had more trees down than he could handle and, if those walnut trees were gone when he got around to them, he wouldn't complain. Anyway, my buddy had a chain saw mill and we were able to produce a dozen or more slabs and eventually some nice furniture from those logs.

My neighbor is the president of a Hunting club here in MD. Its an endless supply of wood ! Ive been able to get tons of wood of Craigslist for free as well . I also have a freind that owns a tree company too ! So wood is never a problem for me. Ive got about 3 Chords of mixed oak out back, white, red, and pinoak.

After replying to a Craigslist ad just before this Thanksgiving, I have managed to scrounge just about 16 cord in 2 weekends. The wood is a mix or oak, maple, ash, and cherry. The property owner just built a new house and is now clearing for his yard. He has a JD tractor and loads the wood into the trucks and trailer for us. All we had to do is help feed the chipper he rented as we were loading the wood. Not a bad deal in my opinion! The good news is next spring he will be clearing the back yard for a pool and large detached garage. His phone number is safely stored in my cell phone.

this wood that i scrounge is for my own heat,in my saw shop.

i take this wood home ans saw it up there, and put it in a shipping container. makes a nice "woodshed"
conwaylakelot007.jpg

it comes off my latest spot for "free wood".....i'm gonna be there a while. 14 acres.
see the hardwood to the right in last pic? we put the branches in the "chipper" and load the rest on the trailer.the hydraulic grapple is for off-load.
CONWAYLAKELOT.jpg

we are covering the entire lot, removing all the hardwood that is about to overtake the softwood.
this particular pine lot was logged with oxen about 25-30 years ago,and the understory of little pine that has come back is really thick...as you can see.
all the hardwood removal will really help the little pines GET GOING!
CONWAYLAKELOT1.jpg

the thick white line is our first trail thru this lot.it ends bye the "old"landing the oxen used.
the thin white line is the property boundry.
CONWAYLAKELOT-POWERLINE.jpg

this is our next trail we cut.the powerline,to some of the "camps" bye the shoreline.we have to keep the tree's from touching the wires.
winter is apon us,and we'll keep cuttin' till the snow gets too deep.
CONWAYLAKELOT074.jpg

the first storm of the season dumped about 8"-10" of snow, then turned to rain, shrank it up to about 4",and tipped over some of the "little ones" on our first trail.
gotta go back over our first trail and clean up the the "tippers".it's going to be an ongoing treat, until the little ones get established.
i'll keep you posted on our progress.

Met a guy who owns a dumpster company and tree service this past summer, He dropped a 20 yd dumpster of mostly oak and some maple for free in my driveway, longer lengths but I don't mind the processing work. I bought him and his wife a good dinner at a local fancy restaurant.

Last week I also scored 7 pickup loads of maple from a house down the road that they are renovating, I left a sticky note on the door asking if he needed to get rid of any of the partially cut wood in his backyard.

I bought a house a year ago in the country little did I know a houseing track was going in next door. I talked to the builder as I insulated the first house in the track. As he knocks them down I chop them up mostly beech and maple some aspen. I have about 25 cords stacked only 12 split and trees in 4 different piles to cut up. Only problem is im on a waiting list for a stove.
