80$ electric bill down from 300$!!!!!!!

I was complaining to my brother-in-law about my electric bill. It was a lot higher than it was last year, I decided it is due to having two kids that are now able to turn every light in the house. My highest bill was $ 74.70. I thought my brother-in-law was going to hit me.

The electric company owes me $300, judging from my last budget reading :coolsmile:

I wish my new stove heated up the entire house, but still have to supplement. Working on finding the air leaks first, then the insulation. I would love to cut off the oil. We are going to install a heat pump this spring. Have to replace the central air, it died. Since I started burning the new stove, oil burner comes on a lot less. Insulation has gone way up in price. Hopefully it will come down with this economy. The blow in type was $3.00 a bag 4 years ago now it is $10.

That's a great feeling. I have had my furnace turned off since October and only pay about $30 per month for NG hot water. Once my kids leave for good my electric should go down too.

Different end, but the oil savings is huge. Glad you are very happy. I've had the oil company call me out that I am going to another server. Very nice indeed. Having wood heat with something else as a back-up is very nice.

Yes, but the savings are the electric savings minus the cost of the wood/pellets/whatever.

Kinda of off topic but I got a quote from Rose and Walker for blown in insulation, then I priced it myself, it was a wash. I would only save about $15.00 doing it myself!

Its always nice to see people happy with decisions, congratulations, just don't want others to get the wrong idea.

Myself I find cutting, hauling, splitting ans stacking of "Free" wood to be very expoensive, so much so I don't mind paying someone over $200 for a cord of part-seasoned hardwood. But even at $200 a cord my EPA wood stove is about break-even with electric heat, usng my geothermal heat pump, and while the wood stove does make the three closest rooms nice and warm, more so than I'd run with the HP, the rest of the house id cooler to much cooler.

Do I like my wood stove, you bet. Would I try to sell someone on getting one by touting big $$$ savings, no. Of course if they are on oil heat and that goes back to over $4 a gallon, the saving do start to count up for them.

First year without the heat pump. Usually two fires a day. Went on vacation a few weeks back and checked the heat pump before we left so the pipes wouldn't freeze. Well it didn't turn on, transformer was blown. Anyways it was fixed, but I'm glad I don't have to rely on the heat pump this winter. Electric usage dropped around 60% but bill only went down some due to the high increase in the utility rate. Only used 500kw last month and still over $100. Two years ago that would have been $50.

I'm glad i'm not running electricity this year to keep warm.

So you're saving 220 a month? Holy cow! that's great... it looks like the worm has turned for fattyfat1.

My wife who keeps track of these things puts our savings around 3k a year. I dunno ...seems kind of high to me but I haven't paid a bill since I got married back in '70. Sometimes I think she may exaggerate a little just to motivate me.

I got blow-in insulation in Oct. for $5.95 a bag from lowes. If you buy 20 bags or more, the machine rental is free. After that you can return any leftover bags even if it makes your total less than 20 and still get the free rental. The difference in warmth when you do it right is phenomenal.

Hum, that's over 20 cents per KWH, and I thought NJ was bad. I think we're closer to 16 cents per, up from 10 cents per for the winter rate a few years ago, still nothing like the increases/decreases we've seen in heating oil cost. We paid about 20 cents in the summer, and the wood stove was no dam help with cooling, but again the geothermal delivered a lot of btus per KWH.

I just check again today, $9.93 a bag. Maybe the price will go down soon. I did cut off the oil yesterday, Going to leave if off until Sat. This week is going to be warm and raining.

That may actually be possible. I remember that early refrigerators burned kerosene. I guess to create the pressure in the compressor. Not sure about how they actually worked. Maybe someone here can try it. The wood stove would have to sit outside of course.
