I know this is probably not what you want to hear, but I agree with the
others that the furnace should take precedence.

This is a tough time to purchase a pellet stove anyhow especially with the
crazy prices of pellets IF you can find them.

IMHO I would take care of the furnace and hot water first, then purchase
a stove in the spring.

...and my dreams of a beautiful flame emitting from behind the glass of my very own pyro-toy start to fade. Thanks again to all for the discussion.

With that said, I have no idea what this crack looks like, but I'd get another person in there to take a look at it. If it needs to be scraped, so be it, but my guess is that it can be repaired if it is indeed an issue.

I've been told the combustion chamber is repairable....or shall I say replaceable. Not sure if I'm up to that task though. I've discussed the process with a local heating guy and it doesn't sound like much fun for a computer guy like myself. ;-) Will have to re-look into it though.

I'm afraid I too, would have to agree w/the most of the "responders" in this subject. Repair, "or" HAVE REPAIRED, the furnace combustion problem, & go from there. Probably will surprise you (in the long run) how much better & "advantageous" that dollar's-&-cent's fix will be, compared to any other alternative. A pretty/dancing flame is truly enjoyable & soothing, but does it really correct the problem,,,most likely not! I, myself am in the process of "restoring" an older fixer-upper Quad #800, (replacing thermocouple & ceramic cover, etc, etc.-that I know of, so far?) that I picked-up for $100.00. Will have about $400.00 into it total, installed in in/laws home. It'll be replacing an "old/dinosaur Trailblazer", like a Whitfield; single-fan, etc. Will be a big improvement over existing stove, BUT, the bottom line is, the "existing stove" is still doing the job, while I'm finishing 'fool-proofing' the Quad. Kind'a like "your situation". Especially as the in-law's a widower, & 85 yrs. old, so can't really take any short-cuts on changeover, as the weather's been down to 19 dgr's here! Wish you luck on your decision, but that's my 2ct's worth,,Bob,,Merry Christmas, & Happy New Year
