Tarm SOLO arrived at work today

Where I work at the Green Mountain Club, we took delivery today of a new Tarm SOLO which we will use to heat our new Visitor Education Center currently under construction. Total space to be heated is approx. 5000 sq feet. We will have 1500 gallons of storage in an STSS tank in the basement.

I will report to the boiler room once things are up and running. It will be interesting to compare and contrast my experiences running the Tarm at work and the E-Classic at home.

I will try to answer all the questions here in one reply -

1) I believe the unit is the MK II SOLO 30? I need to double check that.

2) Roofs are insulated with bomber SIPS panels. Walls are insulated with spray on foam. The building is going to be very tight and our energy consultant is forecasting 5 cords of wood a winter to heat whole complex.

3) Tours - yes there will be tours available for the public as well as local Boiler Room enthusiasts once we get our certificate of occupancy. If you are driving by and want to stop in for a tour once we are open, feel free to - just go to the front desk and ask for me. The building features other green technology including composting toilets and photovoltaic panels. All of the wood was harvested from well managed wood lots in Bristol VT through the Vermont Family Forests program www.familyforests.org and milled at Clifford's Mill in So. Hinesburg.

Louvered vents are part of the HRV system and the air handlers. The building is so tight we need the air exchange. Our heat is delivered throughout the complex via hydronic to air exchangers.

Did you ever fire up your Tarm?
If so what do you think, I'm looking at a Froling 40/50 and I'm on the compare war path...
You mentioned it was a 30 in size to heat a 5000sqft bld? I guess that is possible if it's realy well insulated...
I would like to come after it's fired I'm hoping to build this summer and make the move from CT. Than is if my project holds up better than the economy...

Hi Ron-

Yes we fired it last week for a trial run. We'll be coming online to heat the entire complex (New building, connector, and existing office building sometime later this week. When it is up and running and available for a tour I will make a new post with some photos.

We ended up using sprayed on foam insulation. The building is now incredibly tight and well insulated as a result.
