My Fireside's are the worst pellet I have ever used. I'm using an Enviro Mini and a Quadrafire Mount Vernon and the amount of clinkers and ash are unbelievable. I burned LG out of Canada last year and they were very good. I have had more "no starts" and more clogged pots with these Fireside's than I care to mention. Will never buy them again. I have tried changing the air setting and still have bad clinkers in the pots. I can only run about 12 hours before I have to clean the pots so the stoves will fire up when the thermostats call for heat. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY THESE!

This is a interesting thread, as I am using pellets this year that are horrible, yet were used uneventfully last year. I, too, am getting the heavy ash content, and the pumice stone clinkers. in fact, it feels like sand, and if the pots aren't cleaned quickly, it is like one packs the sand in. Well, my dealer siad this issue was happening all over. Apparently, the manufacturers are placing some small amounts of sand in the process. He mentioned that his company called other dealers that sold different brand stoves, all reporting the same "problem" with the packed in firepots. Very curious ...
I know stove settings can influence the way pellets perform but it seems like there is a lot of inconsistency in the industry as a whole. As I have posted, I have 4 tons of pellets I can't burn and while I have a plan for taking care of that, I can't help but be nervous about buying my pellets for the 09/10 heating season.
I agree. The pumice stone residue is a great description - never experienced anything quite like it last year, yet it happens consistently this year. Very frustrating.

OH yes, there is the BEST word to describe the pellet industry...> INCONSISTENT! There really is no standard or regulation among producers. They can state ash content on their bags all they want, but who is to say if it is even accurate? What's more is that a certain company may have a decent pellet one season and then a shabby product the very next because of the nature of the source of sawdust used. They get the sawdust anywhere they can and it could NOT possibly be the same every time they produce a batch of pellets. So inconsistency rules the industry and we the consumer have to "suffer" with this issue everytime we by a ton. Plus, each stove burns differently and has a different effienciency, so it is useless to try to determine that one PELLET is best or another is worse. Just my 2 cents....lol.novah said:

I bought three bags of fireside ultra they were able to bridge my feed auger and now they are jamming the lower auger as well. they were thicker like pencil size, and 2"+ long. I'm glad I only bought three tons!
I just burned 10-15 bags of Fire Sides and they were the best! Mine were even wet! I put the bags through my pellet vac to get all the wet pellets out and the saw dust. The wet Fire Sides actually had less saw dust in the bag then the dry Penningtons that I just picked up from Bangor Sams Club.
I've burned 32 bags of Fireside Ultra and love the heat output. As for clinkers, nothing out of the ordinary. I get about the same clinker no matter which brand I use(pennington,fireside ultra,greene team). Only have to clean burnpot once a day.
I bought 2 tons of Pennington pellets and 2 tons of tidy timbers. I began burning the Pennington’s first because of my concern with them since soo many people have had problems. Since burning the pellets there have been a lot of fines and longs. Some pellets are as long as 4”. So if you have a picky stove that needs smaller pellets I would advise against getting Pennington. Also just recently when I poured a bag of PENNINGTON’s into the hopper I noticed that there was a piece of wood inside that bag. It was not a long pellet but a 5” piece of wood. I feel that I cannot trust Pennington anymore. Their pellets are so inconsistant. I then called peggy at customer service who did nothing about the problem but advise me to call home depot where I purchased them and have them exchange them out. First thats not home depots problem its Pennington’s. I can see doing that if the bags were ripped but this is a 5” piece of WOOD inside of the bag. Secondly, home depot towmotor does not fit inside of my garage so I have to take out the ton of pellets by hand and load the exchanged pellets back into the garage by hand. Lastly I am not ven sure that they would exchange them or have any pellets left. Thats some good advice PENNINGTON
Dish your responsibility to someone else to deal with including your customers. It is not worth the hassel with this company. I will NEVER buy PENNINGTON PELLETS AGAIn!!
Pennington customer service doesnt care about their customers or their chitty products. Mybe they will start to care when no one buys their crappy pellets. I believe that they dont care this year because of the pellet crunch and the fact that there was a shortage which makes it unfortunate that people have to buy whats out there. But it shows you what type of company Pennington really is. They add insult to injury when they know that their customers have little choice to find other available pellets especially near winter. All I know is that I will never buy from pennington again, period. I wont support those who dont care about their customers and stand by their products which is the least that they can do. It is just amazing how many issues people are having with this company and it is not just isolated incidents it is wide spread and it is long term, not just this year. DONT you remember last years fiasco !

The site is not organized all that effectively so I am just trying to get the word out so that everyone knows pennington is a terrible company and so that they do not get ripped off like myself. And unlike yourself everyone doesnt have the time nor the opportunity to check the entire site out.

Feeling the Heat
Here is my experience with 2 ton of Fire Side Ultra at HD.
I bought 2 tons. I have been burning the first ton with great results, a good amount of ash, but very fine ash that would allow the combustion air to blow through it. also the pellet size was very small maybe 1/4inch to 1/2
Now my stove has been burning differently lately, i've noticed the glass gets dirty quickly, and the ash is more pumice and heavy and seams to almost over flow the burn pot. I also noticed the pellet size is anywhere from 1/2 to almost 2 inchs long. So at first I was thinking my stove was getting dirty (but I clean it very well) now I realize I must be into the second ton. (I restacked when I bought the two tons so its tough to tell where one ends and the other begins)
So 2 tons of fire side ultra bought at the same time from HD. I loved the first ton, but don't care for the second ton that much.
I was planning on shopping around and buying a couple different bags of different brands to see what I should buy for next year. but I am wondering if it will even be worth it, with the inconsistencies.
