Hello all.....

I'm not looking to get him signed up for hockey just yet....

I'm looking to get him out on the bogs with me and teaching him how to skate. Plus a friend of mine does a learn to skate program for young kids.

I just checked his shoe size and it's a size 8. From what I've found that translates into a size 7 hockey skate.

Does that sound right?

Been looking on ebay for a pair but I want to be sure

Size 7 youth is about as small as they make real skates anyway. Apart from ebay, check in at your local sports shop. Around here anyway, the ones that sell skates usually have a good selection of used skates. 3 year olds are not hard on skates - so used ones are as good as new, with 2 benefits: cost is less and if your lucky they will be slightly broken in and therefore more comfortable.

i have been involved in hockey for 50 years as player, coach parent etc etc
skates really need to be tried on when the skate is on but not laced up you should be able to jam your finger behind the kids heel that gives enough room for his toes
please find a sporting good store & get them sized correctly used skates are usually very cheap
last thing you want is for his feet to hurt & not want to continue
also make sure he wears a helmet & some cheap elbow pads as he is gonna fall hell i still do at 5? some years old

PTO as Bob says please do not buy skates from ebay, they really need to try them on. My boy (also 3) started playing this year. And he absolutly loves it. The main thing is to make sure at this age to make sure they advance as they want. I just can't believe how many parents of 3-4 year old kids that will get mad if they are not andvancing as they think they should and are doing there own thing out on the ice, or would rather skate with a bucket even though they can skate without one. I would recommend getting your level 1 certifiction an getting on the ice with them because if it's like own learn to skate program it 40 skaters and 5 coaches. To answer your question about skates, I don't know what you have for skates but they love having skates like daddy. Bauer has a youth skate One 05 it's a great first skate I think they were $40-$45 new, and they look like daddys skates the One 95's. Brian

Thanks all....
Took him to the rink to have him fitted for skates. He also watched a game....kindof scared him since they were high school kids and they were moving pretty fast.

Had to explain he'd be skating with kids his own age. Seemed to like that idea.

His learn to skate program starts next month....he seems excited about it.

Great keep us posted. Have fun!
