I guess everyone knows it's the worst cold-snap of the season so far . . . We made 4* - and its been stuck there for quite a while now.
With the knowledge that it was going to drop, I reset the GW aquastat to 190 (from 180) when I got back from work last night. I loaded a little after 11 PM Wednesday night, raked the last chunk and coals around at 6 AM this morning, then reloaded at a little after 7AM. But for the last say 3 hours of the burn, my main living area zone (the highest thermostat setting of the 6, it is set at 67) has been stuck at 65*. Now yhis in not a huge deal because with radiant. the floor is warm because it's obviously always running. But I noticed that the inside boiler was hanging around 145*. With only one zone running, this seemed a bit low. Of course, if you factor in that some of my ThermaPEX is above ground . . . :roll:
So, anyway . . . since the Viesmann has the outside control, I can tell how much it's "looking for" to heat my house at 4*. When I refilled at 7AM, the inside boiler came up to 160+ quite quickly. It appears that the Viessman is looking for 154* when the outside is 4*
It seems to me that an outside control for the GW damper could produce more heat for times like this, plus conserve wood during more moderate temps. Probably have to have some limits though, to keep from boiling and from dropping too low.
The things we have time to think about when we take time off from working for 'the man'!
