After Six months of back orders, arguments, pellet hoarding, pickup overloading, head scratching, and sawzall surgery I finally fired up my new Mt. Vernon today!
Couldn't have done it without a lot of info. from hearth.com
Here are some pics of my DIY install through the roof (nothing like crawling around on a steep roof in January!)
Anyway, it seems to be running great, but I am so paranoid I keep climbing a ladder and touching the radiation shield to see how hot it gets.
BTW I used the excel pipe and it seems very high quality.

I started to build a hearth pad months ago and then changed the location of the stove to the tile floor so I don't need it anymore.
If anyone wants to make me an offer, it is 3/4 ply with durock board on top. The sides are maple, miter cut and biscuit joined. 49X55. All it needs is your choice of tile on top. it would be a shame to waste.

Also, I seem have an extra outside air kit new in the box for this stove.

Thanks guys,
I know more questions are coming!

Nice setup Rick.....Great looking stove!!

Looks great, your gonna love it. Take that ladder down yet? Happy burning.

Congrats... and keep that stove clean!

Nice job!

How is your pipe temperature up near the ceiling? I bet your surprised at it's low temp? I think you will lose the paranoia quickly.

Congratulations and happy burning!

Rick, Couldn't you have vented that straight thru the wall?......I'm still a newbie.....Just curious....

Raven20,

I initially planned a direct vent, but decided against it because I have a small deck with a railing on the other side, not to mention horror stories I heard on this site.
Didn't want to go out and up because my house has a lot of angles and converging rooflines in that area. Plus, it would have looked pretty awful.
Actually, in hindsight, there was one positive thing about the infamous 6 month Quad back order. It gave me plenty of time to come up with the best plan. I am glad I went vertical, plus I actually like the way it looks.

codebum,

The box is warm to the touch where it enters the ceiling. I can keep my hand on it.
The pipe is hot, I can only touch it for a second or two.

Mine is vented thru the wall......The pipe gets hot but not the box.....I wouldn't be to concerned Rick....Just keep an eye on it...

Congrats on your new install..looks great!
Happy Burning!

Looks Great, Happy Burning. Thanks for the pictures.

Ahh, another temporarily happ Mt Vernon owner. Good luck. The AE isn't as advanced as they would like it to be. It's hit or miss. We take calls everyday about AE problems. Also, you rt rear clearance looks a bit close. Maybe its the angle of the pic but check your owner's manual. The clearances are NOT suggestions. Maybe even spring the 80 for a service call just to make sure you're on target. Happy Burning!

Sweet set up.

But lets talk about you pellet hording comment, shall we?

What is up with that? lets not be "Player Haters". OK?

Just checking to make sure we understand each other. After you bake your paint in and start telling people to clean their stoves we will ask you in the summer how many tons you have in the garage. I seem to think you will be a pellet hoarder. Are we on the same page yet?

Cheers and stay warm
Being cold sucks and there is that shrinkage thing.
Eric

Ha Ha!
No, I am not really a pellet hoarder. Not yet anyway. More like a pellet pig in training, in awe of you experts.
I only stowed three tons, and lost some of that to a basement flood.
But wait till next year...

Nice looking stove and install, Rickster, although personally I would have painted the pipe black.

Now, about Eric's pellet hoarding comment......just how many tons do you have stockpiled Rick?

And when Eric mentions shrinkage in the cold, he isn't talking about the pellets.....

EDIT: OK, just saw that you CLAIM to have less than 3 tons...we'll see....hmmmmmm. Pellet pigs are always truthful about their pellet pigishness. (hey, i made up a new word!).

It's the angle of the photo.
I used a plumb and a laser level on everything.
I think you misunderstood me. That right rear corner looks to be close to the wall. The venting looks fine, it the positioning of the stove that concerns me.

Where's your hearth pad? 2 inch min. and you need 6 inches of side clearance. you may have that in the front but not the back. 12 inch tikle floor. Don't let your insuance company see that.

Not sure I understand...I had a wood stove on 12" ceramic tile floor and the insurance company didn't have any problem w/ it.

When I installed the pellet stove in place of the wood stove this summer, town inspector didn't have any problem with it either.

That is definately not code, especially with a wood stove. You need 16 inches of hearthpad in front for a wood stove.

unless you tile is affixed to concrete, which his obviously isnt. What is under the tile? 2 inches of non combustable sirface. read your owners manual.

.....read your owners manual.

From Travis Industries Avalon Astoria Owners manual, P. 7, "Floor Protection Requirements"

Quote:
" The heater must be installed on a non-combustible floor protector extending the full width and depth of the heater and extending 6" in front (Minimum 28" wide by 32 1/2" deep)(minimum .018" thick - 26 gauge).

Must extend under and 2" to each side and rear of a "Tee" (if used)." End quote

Any questions?

And you think the requirements are the same for every stove? People like you burn their houses down. No mention of hearthpad requirements. Google mt vernon clearances. page 9 smart guy. Go back to home depot and buy another pos

My, My....so defensive. Yes Strangemainer, there's a hater in every crowd.

Now, let me get ready to go to Home Depot tomorrow....I just found out tonight from NHenergy that they sell Avalon Stoves!!! WooHoo!! Now I can get all my parts a mile from home....

Uh OH, Mike Holten from Englander isn't going to be happy when he finds this out! It can't be that NHenergy is wrong about that, right? I mean, he's a dealer, and we all know that dealers know everything, and they NEVER make a mistake.

And calling Englander stoves a "POS".....that's not nice.....seems to me that there are a LOT of posts on this forum for repairs to Harman & Quadrafire stoves.....oh, wait a minute again...that can't be possible!! NHenergy sells those stoves.....nope, I must be mistaken, because I'm not a dealer, therefore, i am not perfect.
