Breckwell P23I Damper Adjustment - again

Is the best setting for the damper at a given feed rate the setting that results in the highest blower output temp?
Seems logical to me, but are there other considerations?
I have a thermometer stuck into one of the heat exchanger tubes and have been adjusting to get the highest temp.
Seems to be blowing excessive embers from the burn pot when the temp is the highest. No actual pellets pop out but a lot
of glowing embers which last more than several seconds to die out around the chamber floor.

The damper is for combustion air. There really should not be any drastic change in the output temp by opening or closing it.

I have the same stove I just purchased it this summer. I also have the same problem with the sparks flying all over the place at times. Seems like it does it mostly when I first start it up after cleaning. I'm not really sure why it does that.
 
When the sparks are flying out it usually means to much air flow. I sometimes do this just to clean the pot out, if I'm to lazy to vacuum. Close the damper until a very small amount of sparks fly out and just leave it.. I'll tell you this has drove me nuts... I've had thermometers stuck everywhere. My cousin has a Breckwell 2000 insert and claims that the airflow is much better in our P23I.. He claims his flame is always lazy/yellow.
 
As a new user myself with a p23i I wasn't sure how or what it should do when burning. I was suprised to see everything flying around. I tried running with the damper closed down to prevent sparks flying out of the pot. Then I quickly got build up (clinker). By keeping it open enough I get sparks flying out when the pellets drop in which keeps the burn pot clean. In between the pellets feeding I get very little sparks flying out. This seems to be working out very well. Now since the burn pot is staying clean I am only shutting down and cleaning every 3 days instead of daily.
 
They are not sparks, such as metal grinding. RELAX. It is normal but play with your damper and it will be ok. Nothing wrong.

I had the same problem at first with the burnpot filling up until I finally realized the damper was closed! I though I had it opened but was mixed up. Now I keep it about 1/4 open and it seems to be working so much better! You have to clean every 3 days?! I sometimes shovel out a little of the ashes while its still on. I shut it down about once or every other week to clean the burnpot. I always know when it needs to be done because it starts to pile up in the pot.
 
I don't mean to steal this thread but how do all of you like the p23i? I've read the reviews on line and in the threads but since I was reading this post I thought I would ask. I have installers coming on Tuesday to check out my prebab fireplace to determine if the 2000i will fit. I don't believe it will so will probably go with the 23i. Thanks.
 
I set my damper until the flame lookes like a nice size deer antler rack.

I have found that if when I close the damper down a bit more, I do get more heat, but more cleaning.

Open it up more I get a bit less heat, but less cleaning.

Damper setting is an art not a science.
