When I was mounting my backer board I could not find anything acceptable at the hardware store for the non-combustible spacers. I took an old aluminum arrow and a hacksaw and wallah, spacers. Just thought that might help someone one day.
 
I used drywall hat channel and attached it vertically with those new drywall anchors that look like a little auger. Each one is rated for 50lbs and they are available in metal.
 
You can also use ceramic electric fence insulators as spacers.
