What is the best sealant to use to seal the chimney cap? About how often does it need to be redone? After taking a look through binoculars today, I could see what was used is failing. My heat is going up and out. Thanks

Normally nothing is used to seal the actual chimney cap to the flue stack. What is the concern?

To the best of my knowledge (basic), there's no need to 'seal' your chimney cap to anything.

I'm guessing what you're likely seeing is smoke (or water vapor) billowing around the top of the chimney... giving the general appearance that something is 'leaking' or amiss.

How would you better describe the (apparent) 'failure'?

Are you talking about the top anchor plate like the ones that come with SS liner kits?
If so, we seal em to the flue tiles with RTV...

I guess I am not describing this correctly or the fact that the cap is connected to a 6 inch liner coming from my insert. The cap I am referring to is the plate that the 6 inch liner comes through at the top of the chimney that supposedly seals the chimney around the liner so there is less heat loss. A block off plate is on the list for next year. I should have done it before this season but it just got away from me.

Thanks Daksy, you type faster than I do.

Got it, this is for the chimney cap. I used a generous amount of good silicone adhesive sealant, think it was GE Silicone II. 6 years later when I removed the old chimney I had to work hard to peel off the chimney cap. Clean the chimney top thoroughly with a brush first.
