Eric, I have been burning without the collar for about 24 hours and only noticed maybe 5 jumpers that smoldered to their ultimate demise in the burn pan. Other than the loss of about 2 btu's in jumpers, is there any other drawback to running without? The flame definitely looks nicer without the collar. It seems like more ash goes behind the burn pot and looks like a pellet or two smoldered back there leaving a tiny amount of creosote on the back wall, but other than that, any harm?

I still want the collars once they are in, but just curious what the drawback is to running without.

This is a very dirty stove.

In the pic you can see the collar. If your stove is putting pellets not into the burn pot, this collar will help funnel the pellets in. Some stoves need the collar and some do not. If you think it will help send me an email. I am not telling everyone that their stove will self destruct without one but..... If you think it will help you send an email to [email protected] and I will assist you as best as I can.

No peer pressure, promise to be a life time pellet pig, or free beer.

Eric

Believe me, go with the free beer. :)

In talking to a former Breckwell employee, there is a chance that IF enough pellets bounce out and land on the bottom of the stove, they can warp the steel.

I am NOT saying this WILL happen, just that there is a very small chance of it.

In my stove, I dont really need it to keep the pellets in place, but what I have found that on setting #2, it pushes the flame taller up towards the air tubes. Or maybe it is just my perception.

Great eric! Ill be waiting for the email. Any chance they can fabricate them in stainless? I know the cost would be more, but they wouldn't burn through so quickly. Just a thought.

I will ask.

Bumping it back to the top

Any problems with the flame going up the auger chute? Looks like the flame would be directed right up there!

Also, looks like this unit just sits on top of your existing burn pot, is that correct?

No on the flame and yes on sitting on top. Breckwell has been sending one out with all new Big E's. This will work with all models and is a little better made and to the same specs.

Nice - I'm still in for 1. If I like it I'll order another.

Firstly, what's up with the red big E? its kinda cool
Secondly those collars help, you can make something just as effectifve for practically nothing, i have made collars for my customers in the past, all i did was take a peice for thinnish sheet metal and instead of making a complete square it was more of a U shape, with the open end facing the back wall of the stove.
i used like a strip of metal maybe like 2'' by 12'' and put two bends in it
sometimes 1 7/8'' for a smaller stove but the big E might need a bigger one, i never really put much thought into them it took me about 3 minutes to make and it gets the job done

UPDATE!

After burning for a while with the new collar, the burn quality has vastly improved on the stove. I highly recommend any one with a Big E purchase one. This should be a factory standard item - it works that good!

Eric -

I just bought another Breckwell Big E direct from Breckwell on Ebay. It was refurbished with 1 year warranty on electronics and 2 years on the body - $825 delivered. Point being, if it does not come with the collar I would like to purchase another. Please PM me with all the info. The collars work great.

FYI - as of 6/8/09 12:00pm EST Breckwell still has the item up for sale - 2 left
