i recently bought a new handle for my chopper 1 axe, but the wedge that came with it broke while i was putting the head back on the handle. is there a place where i could buy just the wedge part that i need?

If it's a standard type handle, I'd imagine that most any hardware store or even a Lowes or Home Depot would have the wedge; or over the web: http://www.mcmaster.com/#hammer-handle-wedges/=a1tze

You must be talking about those wooden wedges as opposed the stepped metal ones? The wooden handle tool hasn't been made that I can't break...
...and yes I've broken them wooden wedges too ...just reassemble the wedge and bash it in the best you can.
Alternately griping the handle with both hands the bashing the handle end down on a cement floor ..this will help fasten the head to the new handle. OK now when your satisfied the head is secure on the handle just stick it in a bucket of water and let it soak in for 5 days. After soaking trim off the excess wedge. Whatever you do don't try and bash the axe head on to the new handle.

Thanks for a great link! These folks have a fabulous stock, looks very complete. But their website doesn't answer basic questions such as: What is the minimum order? or Shipping info and estimates?, etc. Do you know how to get that info?Funk Brother said:

I was amazed, however- these guys have not only all different sizes and styles of Ash tool handles, but will also sell you the metal wedges. Who would've thunk it? ;-)
BTW I have seen axe and sledge and maul handles most everywhere, but I've never seen anyone stocking a hatchet handle. Or wedges.
i had someone tell me that it is better to soak it in some kind of oil like oil motor oil because it won't evaporate like water will. if i can't find a new wedge; i'm gonna bash it back on and soak it.

I heard that about oil but never tried it...I dunno. With 2 dogs always nosing around you have to be careful what you keep in buckets.
edit you can use a punch to manipulate the wedge in too. When you hit it you don't want to hit the axe head cause the almost imperceptible bounce factor will work against a good solid fix.

i emailed the chopperaxe people and they said they would mail me a new wedge for free. i am very impressed.
Mcmaster-carr doesn't have a minimum order, and shipping prices are reasonable... probably $5 or so for small stuff, in my experience. They don't estimate the shipping; I think they just tack it on when your order is shipped.
