So i have one of those food saver vacume sealer things...what about filling one of the bags with ice,vacume seal it then leave it out so it thaws...Now u got a handy bag of sealed water to toss in the stove....Bad idea?

saftey is your best prevention - dry wood , clean chimney and sweep when needed and you should never need your FS bags

Yes, bad idea; open the door on a heavy fired stove leaves in fresh air which could spew out sparks and flames into her face, on her clothing and/or on the floor. Now you have what we call a house fire with at least one person injured. Teach her how to safely close down all the air and call the fire dept. as a good plan "B". Evacuate the house if any doubt. With all of the petrochemicals in today's homes fires will double in size every minute which leaves only seconds to get out. Leave fire fighting to those who are trained. No house is worth a life. If you want to throw something into your stove, go to your fire department and fill a baggie with dry chemical fire extinguisher. If you think it is running away, open the door and toss the bag in.

I'd be afraid of the stove cracking or splitting a seam as soon as the water hits hot metal. Rapid, uneven metal contraction could me more dangerous.

Ever out out a campfire with a garden hose? It takes a suprising amount of water to extinguish a fire. A few bags of ice would be ineffective at best. I think the best thing to do is fill your bags with dry chemical extinguisher or baking powder...smother the fire with an inert powder that displaces the oxygen in there and kills the fire with minimal risk of exposure to you and minimal risk of explosion that might hurt your stove or injure someone.

Bad Idea. Just shut the stove down as tight as possible. If anything starts going bad, GET OUT. Opening the door on an out of control stove is very dangerous to begin with.
9999 times out of 10000 the stove and pipe will withstand the fire. It may need to be replaced, but it will take it. All I can tell you on this is "trust me" when I say--humans do not take to being on fire very well.

If you're looking for simple . . . learning how to shut things down as much as possible is the simplest and safest way.
