I have a short exhaust vented back through wall on my accentra insert. At the end is a curved down part with silver tape.My 1st question is I remove that end to clean the exhaust pipe,do I brush from the ouside in or inside out? Also how do you collect the stuff that comes out? jUST VACUME?
i HAVE BEEN TRYING TO find that silver tape but I dont know what its called.I searched onlne for stove pipe tape but came up with nothing.Do you have a site where I can buy that and a short brush for cleaning

Found this looking for brushes. Looks pretty handy. The best arrangement I can think of is to have a cleanout tee at the bottom of the exhaust leg inside. This tee has a small collection pot at the bottom of it that is removable. You can brush the soot back into the vent pipe (slowly) and it will drop into the cleanout pot. Just remove it and dispose of it. You'll probably need to shop vac around the tee after you replace it, but this can be a fairly easy process.

The tape is called metal tape and any hardware store will stock it..

Take a look at this video of a vent (exhaust) clean using a leaf blower (with it's suction) posted by ResOps on hearth.com. Folks that have tried this method say it really cleans the nooks and crannys of the outlet of the stove. Also try a search for LEAFBLOWER on both forums for much more info.

I have been burnig since 12/8 went through just over a ton and have not cleaned the exhaust yet. Do the stove once a week. Full vac out and such. clean burn pot daily

Since burning 24/7 I have been cleaning mostly every 3, max 4 days, with a vacume of exhaust every other week. Having an insert with a flex able liner I pull the T and vacume everthing every where. A lot of ash.

I have probably cleaned my stove(full clean out with vacuum) 6 times since we started the stove on November 4. Burned about 1.5 tons. Haven't cleaned the exaust once. Plan on doing the "weed blower trick at the end of the season.

I don't think the manual says much about cleaning the actual vent pipe. I can say the first elbow out of the stove looks good.

I have seen vents uncleaned for 3+ years. Stove will still work OK. I did clean the vent anyway as part of my service. One of them had 4" and it was about 1/3 full of ash on the bottom of the horizontal section. Not saying you should never clean the vent, IMO once a season should be plenty.

I have not burnt alot but have cleaned the stove once every 2-3 days since installed on Jan 13th. I would like to do the leaf blower trick but its vented through the chimeny and will have to get on the roof. Does anyone else do this??

Have seen some posts where folks have used the leaf blower on blow and connected it at the stove end of the vent pipe. They say it blows everything outside just as well. Only difference is a good seal is needed around the leaf blower to the vent pipe or it will blow the vent stuff back into the house. :ahhh:

The blower trick looks like a lot of fun but it doesn't really clean anything up, just relocates it. One thing I've learned is that soot and ash doesn't dissolve. The video shows a guy blowing a pretty big cloud of soot onto a snow bank, which is ok until the snow bank melts and the soot starts coming back into the house on his shoes, the dog's feet, etc. In my case, along with the snow bank it would also be blowing all over the stored lawn furniture, my cedar siding and the rest of the 4 tons of pellets I have stored outside. For the few times I really need to clean out the vent, I think I'll keep the mess under control and make sure it makes it either in the trash or in the woods.
