Feeling the Heat

Just got my bill for NG. Last month I paid $346.00. This month $164.00. We started burning the new wood stove on 1/14/2009. We used the furnace for 7 days full in the billing period. We ran furnace for 2 hours each morning to get to temp. We set the thermostat in the prior billing period at 67 in the day time and 57 at night. We now are getting 69-71 degres during daytime and 62 -64 at night. I hope that this is good news. The temps were 0-10 for almost two weeks her in MI. Does this compare with what you all are getting?

My normal gas bill in winter is 50 bucks, last month with the extreme cold I hit 74. But I burned 3 cord so far this year. I should add, my neighbors were around 275-350 for gas only!!!

I can only hope for that. How many sq. ft. I am heating 2800 sq. feet two story home.

You definitely got me beat... 1957 brick ranch, 1400 square feet and an exposed basement on 2 sides. No insulation on the two exposed basement walls. I keep it 72-75.

Sounds like you're on the right path!

My last gas bill was $16.95 (minimum is $13.00), my damn cat tripped the programmable thermostat so it ran for a little while before I got home one day. I now lock the cat in his liter box when I leave the house... well, I've thought about it anyway. :)

1200 sq ft Ranch kept at 70-80 deg (depending)... sometimes down into the upper 60's at night. My last gas bill was 57 bucks. But my stove, water heater and dryer are gas, so that's really where the cost is coming from. I don't think the furnace kicked on once in the last pay period.

Yea- cold for sure, our ave temp for Jan was 17.5deg. I've used 250 gal propane so far this winter. Normally would use 2000gal without wood. At $2.00 plus that's a heafty gas bill $4-5 thousand dollars.

NG bill for this season alone has been great. Average about 30.00 a month. We have stove and furnance on gas. We have a 2,500 sq ft two story house. Were the fireplace runs 90% of the day. The house stays at 65-70 degrees then at night for about four hours the furnance runs at 57 degrees.

Finally, I think we are beating Amerian. Kudos to everyone else that is saving money.

Heating 1800 sq ft ranch, my gas bills run $30-40 and that's just for hot water and the $10 customer charge (what a rip). I figured my ng bill would be around $300 per month without wood heat and the house would be much colder. My stove has paid for itself in less than 3 years.

My gas bill was $0.00, because my last bill was an estimate & I called in the actual meter reading,
whichwas alot lower. :coolsmirk:

Some of them take estimates at times, others always use actual readings. It should be stated on your monthly bill how the amount was determined. If they have made an estimated reading you can go out to your meter and record the usage, then and phone it in. I personally wouldn't bother, unless the amount as completely abnormal... They don't do estimates every month and when the actual reading is taken your account is credited if they over estimated.

Those numbers sound on par. Back when I lived in Des Plaines IL. I was forkin' out $250 a month to keep the 150 sq ft place a paltry 62* with the furnace. As much as I wanted a woodstove then and there it wouldn't have been feasable as I wouldda had to go to Wisconsin to cut wood...................

Congrats jlow! Your gas bill is so much lower and as you get use to burning, I bet it's going to get even lower.
Welcome to the addiction of wood burning. ;-)

Thanks for the encouragement!! I have already cut up three maples that had fallen last fall. Will plits and stack when the ground gets drier in my yard. Hope to get a good quantity. How many cords in a large maple( base of tree about 24")

My last bill was $144 burning part time nights and weekends 4400 sqft very energy eff home
2 97 % eff furnaces and foam /cellulose insulation 2x 6 walls . low-e /argon windows etc

I gotcha beat.......... my gas bill is $0 every month. I have an all electric house. However, my electric bill averages about $220 a month in the winter. I'm happy with it considering it's my only utility bill.

Wait a minute... what?? Do they do that?? And how would I know what the actual reading would be?

I do the same here. The gas Co has me on a $175 estimate, so I just go to the meter in the basement and call in the number. $34 last month and $41 this month. I was real happy with this past month's bill because the gas was coming on nightly during that super cold spell. Heating about 1500 sq. feet of a 1920's drafty craftsman. I've hit the wood supply pretty hard, but can always cut more!
